Despite reports to the contrary, Activision is moving ahead with its usual schedule, releasing a “full” Premium Edition call of Duty This year’s game. While the publisher revealed next to nothing about the game, it did confirm that it’s happening.
As part of Avtivision’s first quarter 2023 financial results, the publisher said it expects the game to launch alongside Warzone Mobile “later this year.”
While we used to learn about Call of Duty’s annual releases now and even earlier this year, recent iterations have revealed more in depth in their respective release years. If this trend continues, don’t expect to hear anything about the upcoming game later in the summer.
That’s probably why Activision hasn’t even announced who is leading development on the project. Since the introduction of the three-year/three-studio cycle, it’s easy to tell which studio will be making that year’s game. But that cycle has been broken, and these days, different major studios tend to contribute more to each Call of Duty due to unified technology.
For months, there have been reports that Activision may be about to break its annual Call of Duty release cycle, but there’s been no consensus on what the publisher plans to fit into that timeline.
There’s always the possibility of some kind of premium content, but until Activision thoroughly confirms what that is, we can’t say for sure. Sledgehammer Games is reportedly working on an expansion for Modern Warfare 2, but it’s unclear how much content we can expect.
Whichever studio ends up dominating the next game, it’s likely to be closely related to Warzone 2.0, similar to the original Warzone. If the game is indeed set in the world of Modern Warfare, the shift would make sense, at least in terms of theme and gameplay.
