Also this year we are expecting a new generation of iPhones from Apple. These are usually updated annually, so 2022 should be no exception. As usual, Apple itself keeps a low profile on details, but we have already been able to collect some rumors about the technology and design of the new iPhones. There are also first pictures of what the iPhone 14 Pro could look like.
This is what the iPhone 14 could look like
The new display notch, which we have never seen in any smartphone before, is eagerly awaited and much discussed. The rumors come from Ross Young (@DSCCRoss), who has been in the display industry for a long time and is the CEO of Display Supply Chain Consultants. The company focuses on research and industry insights for displays for smartphones, tablets and more.
According to him, the iPhone 14 should have two notches on the front. A small round one for the camera and next to it an oval notch for the technology behind Apple’s Face ID. Other smartphones either have a long notch or just a small round one. This combination therefore seems rather unusual.
In addition, the iPhone could have a thicker case, which could make the camera hump disappear completely. At least that’s what the colleagues at assume Giga
Other than that, we don’t expect any major changes in the design of the new Apple phone. The concept artist Vova LD (@ld_vova) has processed these changes in an unofficial design of the iPhone 14 Pro and shared it on Twitter:

Test production for iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max has already started
Of course, we cannot say how exactly this corresponds to the actual design. However, we do know that the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max are already in test production at Foxconn. That reports Notebookcheck (via Taiwan Economic Times). For the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max, this means that the design is fixed and no more changes are possible.
Test production takes place to ensure that real production later runs smoothly. The other iPhone 14 models are produced by the supplier Foxconn. As far as we know, test production has not yet started here.
The iPhone 14 will probably get more megapixels and pixel binning
As far as the hardware is concerned, Apple wants to improve the new iPhone properly, at least in a few points. The first is the camera system. The iPhone 13 still works with 12 megapixel lenses, where the competition already offers over 100 megapixels. The iPhone 14 should actually have a 48 megapixel camera installed. Analyst reports Ming-Chi Kuo via Macrumors.
In addition, the camera of the iPhone 14 should be able to record videos with a resolution of 8K. Up to 4K is currently possible. The so-called pixel binning should be used for this purpose. Here the camera takes pictures with 48 megapixels, but combines four adjacent pixels so that a 12 megapixel photo is created in the end.
The technology is mainly used in low light, since the iPhone can grab the light from four instead of just one pixel and improves the exposure. If there is enough light, you snap pictures with 48 megapixels. Kuo also takes a quick look into the future: According to him, the iPhone 15 could also be given a Periscope lens.
The Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra also features pixel binning. Its camera convinces and disappoints at the same time:

iPhone 14 with more RAM and data storage
Apple apparently wants to expand the memory on both sides, i.e. both the working memory and the data storage. Apple could install 8 GB of RAM in the iPhone 14 Pro if you look at the leaker yeux1122 on the Korean platform Naver believes. Apple has always installed less RAM than most Android smartphones because its own operating system works efficiently with its own hardware and iPhones therefore do not need as much RAM. However, a jump from 6 GB to 8 GB of RAM seems realistic.
In addition, the data storage could double from up to 1 TB on the iPhone 13 to up to 2 TB on the iPhone 14. For most people, 1 TB is probably far too much, so we think 2 TB would be overkill. The rumor is based on a report from the Chinese side MyDrivers. Accordingly, Apple relies on the new storage technology QLC for the iPhone 14, with which 2 TB would be possible. It is still unclear whether these will also make it into the latest smartphone.

No physical SIM card in iPhone 14?
The iPhone 14 could completely do without a slot for physical SIM cards. The page MacRumors claims to have learned from an anonymous tipster that American mobile service providers should prepare for the release of eSIM-only smartphones by September 2022.
However, it is unclear whether the information is correct or refers to the iPhone 14. It is also conceivable that the SIM card slot is missing in certain models or regions and not everywhere and for all iPhone 14 models.
The iPhone mini is obsolete
Speaking of models: Apparently, Apple wants to do without the mini version with the next generation. That would mean you have four models to choose from:
- iPhone 14 (6.1 inch)
- iPhone Pro (6.1 inch)
- iPhone Max (6.7 inch)
- iPhone Pro Max (6.7 inch)
According to the website W&V Apple discontinues the mini version due to low sales.
When is the iPhone 14 coming? Apple usually introduces the new iPhones in September or October and releases them a short time later. This year will likely be no different. It is also unclear whether colleague Alex regrets his switch from iPhone to Android despite all the innovations.
Are you an iPhone user or do you have an Android phone? Are you looking forward to the iPhone 14 and what do you think of the changes? Please let us know.
