AMD is reopening the barrel: After Intel had to admit defeat in a direct duel against the Core i9-13900K, they now want to take back the CPU crown with the Ryzen 7000X3D – at least in the gaming segment.
AMD presented three new models at CES 2023, which have earned the suffix X3D thanks to their three-dimensional L3 cache. On top of that, there is good news for everyone who is already looking forward to the release of the gaming processors. Because a near release window was delivered right away.
For the first time also Ryzen 9 with 3D V-Cache
AMD wants to turn the tide with the Ryzen 9 7950X3D, Ryzen 9 7900X3D and Ryzen 7 7800X3D models. After the first generation of CPUs with 3D V-Cache was limited to a Ryzen 7 model in 2022, this time AMD’s upper CPU class in the form of the Ryzen 9 is also to be equipped with the three-dimensional cache.

AMD knocks Intel off the gaming throne with a vengeance
According to the data sheet, the flagship in the form of the Ryzen 9 7950X3D comes with the usual 16 dual-thread cores, a boost clock rate of up to 5.7 GHz, a TDP of 120 watts and a full 144 MB of L2 and L3 cache.
The two smaller announced models appear with the same TDP, but make cuts in cores, boost clock and cache size.
The 3D V-Cache, which mainly distinguishes the CPUs from the main series, which is around six months old, is just as large as in the previous generation at 64 MB. But this time the boost clock rate is significantly higher than with the Ryzen 7 5800X3D. It had to make do with a significantly slower maximum clock rate than its sibling model without a 3D V-cache. The Ryzen 9 7950X3D, on the other hand, is said to offer the same 5.7 GHz as the Ryzen 9 7950X.
According to AMD, this is due to the chiplet design of the Ryzen 9 models, as explained to ComputerBase. Because each of the flagship CPUs has two chiplets instead of a monolithic chip. However, the 3D V-Cache is only located on one of the two chiplets, which allows the high clock rate to be maintained.
Ryzen 7 7800X3D: 20 percent more performance
At least for the smallest of the three models, AMD also revealed something about the gaming performance as part of the presentation. The new CPU was compared with its own predecessor in a series of its own gaming benchmarks. Depending on the game, you should be able to beat them by 21 to 30 percent. However, the manufacturer’s own benchmarks should of course always be treated with caution.
As reported by ComputerBase, AMD also mentioned comparative values for Ryzen 9 7950X3D and Intel Core i9-13900K in a separate appointment. The AMD model is said to have been between 13 and 24 percent ahead in Full HD resolution, depending on the game. In the final presentation, however, these values no longer appeared. They should therefore be consumed with particular caution.
New gaming CPUs already in February
AMD also provided information on the release window for the three new gaming processors. All three models are scheduled to appear in February. However, no one wanted to give a more precise date in the form of a specific date.
And there is still no clarity on the prices either. Neither dollar nor euro prices were part of the AMD presentation.
CPUs also without X
In addition to the three CPUs with 3D V-Cache, AMD also presented three more processors. These are the Ryzen 9 7900, Ryzen 7 7700 and Ryzen 7 7600 models. They not only do without the X suffix in their name, but are also limited in terms of power consumption. Each of the models appears with a TDP of 65 watts or a PPT of 88 watts.
The models are priced around 120 dollars (Ryzen 9 7900) or 70 dollars below the X versions. The market launch for the non-X models is January 10th.
