ASUS recently announced a potential Steam Deck competitor, the ASUS ROG Ally, which aims to bring life to the world of handheld PCs. According to leaked specifications, Valve needs to dress warmly.
Since the success of the Steam Deck, a number of hardware manufacturers have become aware of the handheld PC sector and are tinkering with their own solutions. ASUS recently announced its own alternative to the Steam Deck with the ROG Ally and promised significantly better performance, but without giving exact specifications.
The same has now apparently been leaked and if the information is correct, it could be very tight for the Steam Deck, because the ROG Ally is not only visually attractive, but apparently much more powerful.
According to the leak, the ROG Ally contains the following: The heart is a custom-made AMD Ryzen Z1 processor, which is supposed to deliver CPU and GPU performance. The display is said to deliver Full HD resolution at 120 Hz with 500 nits and a response time of 7 ms, which would be significantly stronger than the Steam Deck display with its 1,280 x 800 pixels at 60 Hz. 16 GB of LPDDR5 dual channel RAM are used as working memory . A 512 GB PCIe Gen 4 M.2 SSD is responsible for the storage space, a MicroSD slot allows additional storage media. The weight is 608 grams.
Exciting: instead of a Linux-based operating system like the Steam Deck, the ROG Ally Windows 11 should be used, which would of course be pretty tasty in terms of the compatibility of games and services. The ROG Ally should also support ASUS tools such as Armory Crate SE, including for key assignments, overlays and performance settings.
Doesn’t sound bad, if the specs are accurate, the ROG Ally could be a strong contender for the Steam Deck. It remains to be seen whether the price will also match. According to current rumors, the ROG Ally will cost between 649 and 899 US dollars and will possibly be released in October 2023. But: everything should still be treated with caution, there is currently no official information on this.
