The mood around Battlefield 2042 remains tense even in the actually reflective Christmas season. The Christmas skins of the shooter, which appeared in advance, already caused irritation for some players, so DICE had to assert that playful improvements have the top priority.
Via an Xbox blog post the developers have now announced a suitable mode for the festive clothing: Attack of the Elves
, so attack of the elves. While some gamers may look forward to some holiday gibberish, others find that the shooter doesn’t take its futuristic war scenario seriously enough. That pissed us off at the casual, fluffy sayings of the specialists:

BF 2042 has a huge story problem
what is Attack of the Elves?
The mode Attack of the elves
from December 16, 2021 to January 6, 2022 in Battlefield Portal play. It’s a 32-player zombie experience in which Team Santa competes against the team of elves who seem to have been infected with something. How exactly the mode is playful is not yet known. It is possible that both teams have different objectives or the elves can somehow infect the Santas.
Presumably the skins come into play here and maybe we will see undead holiday elves on the other side in addition to Santa Claus costumes. The developers promise at least a suitable winter theme around it.

This means that the players probably don’t have to worry that the Christmas skins, which are too silly for some, will also prevail in All Out Warfare or Hazard Zone. Nevertheless, a few dissatisfied voices mingle with the joy of the Christmas event.
That is what the players think of the Christmas content
For user trigger on Reddit, then the developers send the wrong messagewhen the Christmas mode hardly eats up resources and time:
Even if it was already done, even if the effort is minimal, it just sends the wrong signals. Lots of bugs that break the game are still there, some features are missing and most importantly in my opinion, BF used to be a serious franchise. For me, this confirms that they have no idea what their fans want and will push them towards hero shooters and would-be Fortnite one way or another.

In fact, according to an insider, the next Battlefield should follow in the footsteps of the popular hero shooters even more.
DowellTV agrees with him on Reddit. It is a question of attitude to focus now on the promised changes:
It’s not even about the hassle or anything like that. When your game is in such terrible shape, you have to show that you are determined to fix that – and only that. That’s the only way to get the confidence and the hope of keeping the players alive. You have to show that getting the game back on its feet is important to you. Adding new skins and stupid modes like this while the game is suffering from tons of bugs and optimization issues just doesn’t make a good impression. As a player, that just takes away my hope, no wonder that 80 percent of the players have run away.

Here, too, Battlefield 2042 suffered from technical problems, while tester Dimi was able to playfully convince:

But other players slow down their anger. They look forward to festive content and remind you that the creative portal is also intended for such content. Especially since many rule out that the event really delays the planned improvements.
This is what user SuitingUncle620 writes, for example on Reddit:
Those comments … I know a lot of you are mad at the game, but remember that Portal was built for this kind of content to create fun, unique game modes. Some of you need to stop looking for a reason to be angry. It is unnecessary and does not bring you anything.

User marinarahhhhh adds that the mode almost certainly has nothing to do with the currently planned changes to the game and probably does not delay them. He thinks it is unfair to chalk it up to DICE on principle.
It feels unfair to me. The amount of work that goes into the Santa-vs-Elf mode should be comparatively low. Nor is it that it was only developed in the last four weeks.

Benno14c is also looking forward to the mode and points out that there is still enough other content:
I think that’s okay. I mean it’s portal. If there’s one place to relax and have some fun, it’s there. Do you want to have the normal portal experiences? Then take part in these rotations, there are plenty of others from DICE and custom ones from the community.

What is your opinion on the Christmas mode? Are you looking forward to fun holiday getaways or are you bothered by the fact that Battlefield 2042 is striking in such a cheerful tone? Should the developers rather focus consistently on the improvements?
