Borderlands 4: Does it have an open world? That's what Gearbox says!

At the Game Awards 2024, the wait was finally over and Gearbox presented Borderlands 4 to the public. Apart from a few game scenes, what was shown was still pretty vague. Now there is at least information about the game world that could possibly disappoint.

Let's rip the band-aid right off: Borderlands 4 will not have an open world. Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford said this in a post on Twitter (no one mentions site X). Here a fan published pictures from the loot shooter on which the words “Open World” can be read.

Pitchford responded with the following sentence: “I wouldn't use the term 'open world' because it carries a lot of baggage with it [auf Borderlands 4] does not apply. You'll see.”

However, it is also important to him to emphasize that Borderlands 4 has a large game world that you can travel seamlessly and without loading times. According to Dark Souls, every point you see in the distance should actually be reachable. This is particularly interesting in view of the trailer.

The colleagues at Gamespot have already determined that the moon can be seen in the distance. In an interview, the magazine explicitly asked Pitchford whether the moon could also be reached without loading times. His answer: “Everything in the scene.”

So we can be curious to see how open and extensive the world of Borderlands 4 really will be. According to Pitchford, a lot of love goes into the game and the soul of the designers can always be felt. It is much more than a “systemic, algorithmic world”.
