A burned-in display on OLED TVs is very annoying – but avoidable. Netzwelt explains how to prevent burn-in and why saving electricity is not always wise.

OLED televisions are real power guzzlers in the bright red category G of the new EU energy label. Especially in times of skyrocketing electricity prices, this tempts the TV to be disconnected from the mains manually or via smart sockets when it is not being used. After all, it still consumes energy in standby mode.
What many do not know, however, is that important processes take place in standby mode that guarantee the longevity of your OLED display. So if you constantly unplug your TV out of well-intentioned economy, you risk the dreaded burn-in effect – and this massive damage can no longer be repaired.
OLED Pixel Refresh works in st andby mode
Burn-in is one of the biggest nightmares for TV owners with expensive OLED models. The phenomenon refers to “burned-in” patterns of pixels that are permanently visible on the screen – also known as “ghosting”. This happens especially when gaming, when the same energy bar is displayed over countless hours of TV operation.
To contain this problem, LG has developed the Pixel Refresh process, Sony calls a similar function Panel Refresh. The tiny LED light elements that illuminate the individual pixels on OLED screens are automatically calibrated after a few hours in standby mode. This permanently prevents burn-in of images.

If you don’t treat your OLED television to this fresh cell cure in standby to save electricity, you will significantly shorten the healthy life of your display – and in view of the high purchase prices of the devices, you will make a good loss on the bottom line.
