The sword of Damocles hung for years Account Sharing Ban
now it struck over our heads and in Canada. Netflix has banned user account sharing, but the Canadians are not backing down.
Netflix’s move caught users off guard on Wednesday, but instead of paying an additional $8 CAD (Canadian Dollars) per user, many of them chose not to pay at all and quit.

Other big markets too hot?
The Canadian streaming market is of course not small, but Netflix is probably testing the fairway before they dare to tackle the final opponent called USA. The account sharing ban was also imposed on New Zealand.
Even Europe is not spared: In Europe and Portugal, users who want to share their account should pay 4 dollars (Portugal) and 6 dollars (Europe) per additional person. This does not apply to the basic payment model, and up to two more accounts can only be booked for the most expensive premium version.
And Europey?
At the moment we are still spared the price hammer, but using the example of the four countries mentioned in this article, it can fall from one day to the next.
Almost three quarters of GameStar users would terminate their account if the ban and the associated price increase came – and you wouldn’t be the only ones with that.
Has Netflix overestimated its worth?
In a tweet on Wednesday, Netflix admits that there is a lot of confusion surrounding the account-sharing ban and tries to counter the shitstorm with a “We’re giving you more control over your account”.

The streaming market is now highly competitive, with Disney+ saying it lost 2.4 million users in the last quarter – Netflix could dwarf that number after a mass exit of subscribers. The competition is happy, because if you don’t binge on Netflix, you’ll do it somewhere else.

Account sharing is to be discontinued. The quality of Netflix’s own titles has also been falling for some time and the streaming provider’s willingness to discontinue has long been a thorn in the side of fans. Could the account-sharing ban be the nail in Netflix’s coffin? What is your opinion on this heated topic? Feel free to write it below in the comments!
