A permanent Horde mode has long been on the wish list of Destiny 2 fans and as of April 9th, this dream will finally come true.
As Bungie has already confirmed, a comprehensive update called Into the Light will be released before the launch of the upcoming expansion Destiny 2: The Final Shape, which is scheduled to go live on April 9th. Bungie had not yet revealed what it would contain. Until yesterday, because a new game mode was presented as part of a developer stream.
It’s called Onslaught and is actually a permanent horde mode that quite a few fans have had on their wish list for a long time. There have already been some events with a similar character, but no real Horde-style game mode yet. In the mode, you fight in teams of up to three players against waves of Witness forces, apparently using pretty much the entire catalog of creatures.
There are even several variants of this. In normal mode you have to survive ten waves. In a challenge variant you defend yourself against a whopping 50 waves and there will also be a variant with a higher level of difficulty, but this only for previously set up fire teams, while for the other variants the teams can be set up via matchmaking.
Onslaught is about surviving waves of enemies while protecting an ADU, a device that keeps the city safe. In addition to defeating enemies, you collect scrap, which can be spent during the defense phases on installing tools like turrets, tripwires, and more. You can watch some impressions in the recording of the dev stream, it’s definitely getting down to business there.
Further innovations from Into the Light will be presented in two further live streams before April 9th. If these are of a similar caliber, Destiny 2 could actually lure some players back into the light. It would be necessary because after the last expansion the number of players dropped significantly and Bungie owner Sony is anything but enthusiastic.
