Despite all the criticism, Diablo Immortal has proven to be a box office hit for Blizzard Entertainment. In the meantime, another remarkable turnover mark has been cracked.
The monetization of the mobile spin-off Diablo Immortal has been discussed and criticized at length, but despite everything, the system is proving to be extremely lucrative for developer Blizzard Entertainment. A new report is now bringing fresh sales figures to light – and the developer studio is more than proud of them.
The mobile offshoot of the long-standing and successful action RPG series has meanwhile brought in more than 300 million dollars in sales for Blizzard Entertainment. For comparison: The very popular Raid: Shadow Legends brought in around 370 million dollars in 2021 as a whole, so that Diablo Immortal is much more successful in comparison, since the title was only released in summer 2022.
Around the launch of the game, there was harsh criticism of the title because of the business model and the microtransactions, especially from the large Diablo fan camp. Although the title knew how to convince playfully, Blizzard was exposed to a real shitstorm. Mike Ybarra, President of Blizzard Entertainment, nevertheless defended the microtransactions and pointed out that the majority of players put no money into the title at all and that such a game project could only be released free of charge via the controversial microtransactions.
Despite all the criticism, Blizzard’s strategy seems to be more than paying off. According to the report, the 300 million mark has now been reached just five months after the original release. The original launch in 60 countries around the world is said to have accounted for 155.6 million dollars, with a further 144.7 million dollars being brought in solely by the additional release in China, which was carried out there by NetEase Games.
Remarkable: In China, the title did not appear until about a month and a half later. Nevertheless, the turnover here is almost the same and it is also the country with the most downloads in any region, namely 4.15 million pieces. In total, Diablo Immortal has been downloaded 21.4 million times worldwide.
