As soon as the words “seasons” and “battle pass” appear in a game, players become suspicious. Especially when it comes to titles like Diablo IV, especially after the monetization of Diablo Immortal. The developers have now made some things clear.
Ever since Diablo Immortal, everything Blizzard does has been under scrutiny, especially when it comes to the upcoming Diablo IV. Apparently, the developers have now felt compelled, as part of a live streams
The statements are based entirely on the premise that you don’t want to give players the feeling that they get better than others through payment. Game Director Joe Shely, Associate Game Director Joseph Piepiora, and Community Manager Adam Fletcher had a lot to say on the stream.
Blizzard makes it clear that there will be a clear distinction between Seasons and Battle Pass. In principle, you want to stick to the current season system from Diablo III in Diablo IV. All Seasons content is free and not related to the Battle Pass.
The seasons will not start directly with the launch of Diablo IV, but only a few weeks later. It would feature new progression mechanics, new enemies, quests and challenges, and new content available to all players for free. The leaderboards are also returning and players cannot get any advantages by paying, such as early access to the season.
There’s also a clear statement about the Season Pass. “It’s very, very important to us that we balance the things that you find in the Battle Pass,” Piepiora said, “so that they’re compelling but still very fair, we don’t want to have situations where players feel like they can pay to win.”
We will see whether all this actually happens from June 6, 2023, when Diablo IV is supposed to appear.
