Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, best known for Ms. Marvel, is about to embark on the adventure of a lifetime to film a Star Wars movie starring Rey Skywalker, set in the E. Skywalker attempted to rebuild the Jedi Order after the events of The Rise of Skywalker. However, she seems to have ignored several previous female directors.
It’s exciting to kick off the new year with Star Wars movie news, even if it’s just a small update (via Variety ) that basically says “yes, this is still happening.”

In an interview with CNN, two-time Oscar winner Obaid-Chinoy briefly commented on the current state of the Rey-centric Star Wars movie, which will take us into the post-Skywalker Saga era. “I’m really excited about this project because I feel like what we’re going to create is something really special,” she said. “It’s 2024 and it’s time for a woman to step up and shape a story that takes place in a galaxy far, far away. .”
Unsurprisingly, no plot details or potential production start windows were shared here, but after so many Star Wars projects falling by the wayside in recent years, it’s refreshing to hear positive words from the filmmakers outside of Star Wars Celebrations and Disney events . The busy folks at Lucasfilm have traditionally kept most information under wraps, so we’ll never know if a live-action Star Wars project is actually happening until filming begins.
It’s also no surprise that the most ardent and passive Star Wars fans (who should probably invest in another series at this point) react to every piece of news that Rey is continuing her story after the divisive sequel trilogy In response, the sequel trilogy brought Disney over $4 billion in box office gross alone. However, the filmmakers claim that the project is the first to be led by a woman, which is completely false.
Just in terms of live-action, Star Wars has spawned some amazing TV series from directors including Bryce Dallas Howard (The Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett) and Deborah Chow (“The Mandalorian,” “Obi-Wan Kenobi”). These are just two examples. In addition to this, we have the upcoming series The Acolyte, created and directed by Russian Doll creator Leslye Headland. As for Star Wars animation, Jennifer Corbett famously worked on The Bad Batch with Dave Filoni when Dave Filoni (Dave Filoni) began focusing on live-action films.
Still, Obaid-Chinoy is right about being the first female director to star in a big-screen Star Wars movie. Patty Jenkins had planned to direct Rogue Squadron (which was due to be released last month), but that project was also shelved.
Regardless, the lack of female directors on the Star Wars films is truly baffling, especially considering that legendary Hollywood producer Kathleen Kennedy has been the overlord at Lucasfilm for more than a decade.
