news culture Disney+: This partnership will redistribute the cards, Netflix and Amazon ready to respond?
Quite unknown in our region, Hulu is a fairly popular platform in the United States, partly owned by Disney. And in fact, there’s a serious question about a strong merger between Hulu and Disney Plus…
A VOD story
We all know Disney Plus and, moreover, many of you may already be subscribers to the famous VOD platform that is becoming more and more popular. It must be said that it has its own assets, that is, all the monstrous franchises of the American titan : Marvel, Star Wars, cartoons and animated films, not to mention the catalog of the recently acquired 20th Century Fox.
Still, Disney didn’t put everything into Disney Plus. Hulu is one of its other VOD platforms (33% owned by a third party, Comcast) that produces and broadcasts exclusive series (including The Handmaiden Scarlet).
Disney Plus, but really more
Disney CEO Bob Iger said this during a recent call on the company’s latest results: Content from Hulu will land on Disney Plus in late 2023. This will form an “all-in-one app,” but it won’t spell the end of Hulu.
Honestly, Disney Plus, Hulu, and ESBN+ (another parent company’s video platform) will continue to be offered as independent VOD services. So a priori A bundle (probably with a corresponding package) will be offered that combines content from Hulu into Disney Plus. In addition, the content still needs to be specified.
Now we just have to wait for more details and also know what’s planned for Europe. We currently sometimes air Hulu series and programs through other distributors such as OCS, but their access is not widely available in France.
