The sell-off to developer studios continues unabated at Embracer Group as a result of restructuring and cost-saving measures. Now the Borderlands makers from Gearbox and Saber Interactive should also find buyers.
According to a new report, Embracer Group is said to be in final discussions regarding a sale of developer and publisher Gearbox, after previously selling off other studios such as Volition (Saints Row) and Free Radical (TimeSplitters) in order to promote restructuring measures and cost savings. Gearbox is said to be “closer to a sale than ever before”.
The Embracer Group only acquired Gearbox for $1.2 billion in 2021, but it is unlikely that the company will now get this amount back. Gearbox is responsible for the development and collaboration on well-known titles such as Counter-Strike, Brothers in Arms, Duke Nukem, Aliens and of course Borderlands.
According to the report by My city Further information about the upcoming sale will be announced next month. However, it is already said that a decision has already been made about the future of Gearbox and according to the sources it is: Sell!
One step further is the sale of another development studio, Saber Interactive. The studio behind World War Z, Snowrunner and the (still not officially canceled) remake of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic was bought by Embracer Group in 2020 for $525 million. According to Jason Schreier of Bloomberg
Until Gearbox is sold, the sale of Saber Interactive represents the largest step in the Embracer Group’s cost-cutting measures to date. The 3,500-employee development studio will thus be independent again in the future, although the deal also offers the possibility of the above-mentioned scope, according to the report should mean that Saber could take over other daughters of Embracer. It is not known what this is.
The Embracer Group has been working intensively for some time to save costs by closing, selling or downsizing associated studios and companies. This is intended to plug financial holes caused by the collapse of a $2 billion deal with ties to Saudi Arabia.
