EA’s Vince Zampella once said Battlefield 2042DICE and Battlefield are “a bit too much” for being a Battlefield game.
In an interview with Barrons, Zampella suggested that the team behind the game may also be a little too ambitious.
“I think they’re a little too far from the battlefield,” he said (via VGC). “They’re trying to do something potentially ambitious: increase player count, etc. I don’t think they’ve spent enough time iterating on stuff that makes this interesting.
“It’s not inherently a bad idea. The way they’re set up and executed doesn’t allow them to find the best.”
In late 2021, after Battlefield 2042 failed to receive positive reviews from critics and players alike, the co-founder of Respawn Entertainment was tapped to oversee future Battlefield franchises.
According to a report, EA believes the two reasons for the game’s popularity are the release of Halo Infinite and the Covid pandemic. Infinite’s multiplayer was hurting the game just days before Battlefield 2042’s launch, EA reportedly said during a town hall-style meeting. Also, the work-from-home environment due to Covid-19 is not helping.
Those two variables are only partly to blame, as it admits to a misstep in the launch.
Battlefield 2042 was released in November 2021 and had numerous issues that caused DICE to delay the start of the first season. Soon after the game’s release, players started leaving in droves, especially on PC. Some people got fed up with the game and created a petition demanding a refund from EA.
In our review, Sharif said that while he hopes 2042 will be a more interesting Battlefield game at some point, after a rough release of varying degrees of the series, he said he may not have “the stamina to perform the reason.” Blame DICE for technical issues and missing features, but turn around and celebrate a year later when the game is inevitably ‘good now, actually’.”
