The manufacturer’s processor strategy for its mobile phones has been controversial among Samsung fans for years. Now a piece of news offers hope for improvement. Was the S24 just a slip-up?
The South Korean manufacturer Samsung is increasingly bringing its mobile phones onto the market with its own Exynos processors or is opting for a two-chip strategy. In some parts of the world, the devices are sold with an Exynos chip, in others with a Qualcomm Snapdragon processor. While Samsung does not see any significant differences between the chipsets, fans have been criticizing for years that the Exynos processors are less efficient than their Qualcomm counterparts and are also not as powerful.
For many fans, it was therefore good news that Samsung delivered the Galaxy S23 series worldwide in 2023 exclusively with a Snapdragon processor. But the S24 took a U-turn this year. Only the S24 Ultra has a Qualcomm chip, while the cheaper S24 and S24+ models are equipped with an Exynos processor. This should be different with the new Samsung foldables Galaxy Z Flip 6 and Fold 6 expected for the fall.
Z Fold 6 and Flip 6 appear with Qualcomm chip
These will be delivered worldwide exclusively with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen3 processor, reports the South Korean news site The Elec citing unnamed sources. The reason for this is probably not the fan protests, but rather cost aspects.
As The Elec points out, the sales figures for foldables are still significantly lower than those of the Galaxy S series and it is more economical for Samsung to buy Qualcomm processors than to use its own chipset. However, with the Galaxy S25, expected in spring 2025, Samsung will probably at least partially rely on its own chipsets again – whether fans like it or not.
