Every developer responds differently Speed runs of your own games. Some don't like it at all when players show them their own mistakes and use various bugs and glitches for an absurdly fast playthrough. Other developers even install extra convenience functions for Speedrunners and are in active contact with the community.
The makers of Half-Life 2 apparently decided to leave some big bugs in the game untouchedin order not to ruin the speed runners' strategies. This is how the programmers of the shooter released in 2004 tell it when they watch a video from IGN as their work is taken apart in 50 minutes.
But the three developers take it with humor and are even visibly enthusiastic. But they cannot avoid asking themselves how many years have been worked on the area through which they flew within ten seconds in the course of this half-life 2 speed run.
Just fix all the bugs and see what happens
Most of the bugs from Half-Life 2 that could have been fixed are used intensively by the Speedrun community. One example is wall climbing, where players can glitch up a wall using a cylindrical object like a barrel.
So the developers decided not to fix such bugs afterwards and to throw the entire Speedrun community into chaos.
The programmers tell in the video that they have been following the Half Life 2 speed runs for several years. The idea arose half seriously, simply fix all relevant bugs a week before the next AGDQto bring a breath of fresh air to the speed runs.
"What we need is a bug rotation. Okay, this has been fixed, but here are three new ones!"
In the video you can learn even more crazy stories about the development of Half-Life 2 and you can also enjoy how much fun programmers enjoy watching their game burn:
When the Half-Life developers start chatting, they often reveal interesting secrets. Just recently, game designer Robin Walker, responsible for Half-Life: Alyx, said that Half-Life 3 could still become a reality.
