“House of the Dragon” is just one of several planned “Game of Thrones” spin-offs. In addition to the journeys of the sea serpent, could we also expect an animated series about the mystical Far Eastern kingdom of Yi Ti?
- Some other spin-off series in the “Game of Thrones” universe have already been confirmed.
- Could episode 9 of “House of the Dragon” have given a clue to the location of another adaptation?

Even if the first season “House of the Dragon” plays primarily in King’s Landing, the world of ice and fire is much larger than you think. In the Far East there are vast landscapes and kingdoms shrouded in legend. One of them is Yi Ti. In episode 9, Aemond jokingly assumes that his brother Aegon might have fled there before ascending the throne.
Yi Ti as a sequel to “House of the Dragon”?
Yet Yi Ti would be ideal for hiding from one’s own past, his captors and a scheming family. No other empire is so far east that many suspect it could be reached by a west-east passage around the globe.
In addition to the already confirmed spin-off of Jon Schnee, two other sequels to House of the Dragon that are in the works are a Corlys Velaryon series and a Yi Ti animated series. The Golden Empire is the current working title. What could HBO glean from one of the most interesting geographic regions in the world of Ice and Fire?
Yi Ti is inspired by imperial China. Both in terms of culture, history and location. The vast empire in the east that worships God Emperors, older than the complete history of Westeros and richer than all 7 kingdoms combined, will be an exciting setting for the animated series.
To the end of the world and beyond
Yi Ti is also a great mystery because seldom has a Westerosian man or woman ventured so far east. Accordingly, we have little concrete information about Yi Ti’s customs and history, which of course makes it all the more fascinating.
In Game of Thrones Season 2, Daenerys visits the city of Qarth. This should serve as a starting point for our trip to Yi TI. Qarth is located in the extreme east of the first half of the continent of Essos. Facing the Dothraki Sea and south of the Red Desert lies this city of wonders. To the east of this comes a mighty, almost impassable massif, the Bone Mountains.
Behind them are sagas and legends. For few cartographers and traders have ever ventured so far east and returned by land route. Yi Ti is located in the south and is bordered by the Jade Lake. To the north, the great sand sea and the realm of the strange Jogos Nhai form a natural boundary of Yi Ti.
Farther east is only the island kingdom of Leng, with its tall humans, dense jungles and strange gods. Overshadowed by Ashai, this is the last remaining point of civilization on Essos. For beyond the Bleeding Sea and the Mountains of Sorrows follow only horrors and nightmare tales.
Realm of wonders
Yi Ti is both the name of the region in the east just described and of the Golden Empire located there. It is the successor empire to the fabled Great Dawn Empire, which fell during the Long Night, part of the Azor Ahai prophecy.
Yi Ti is said to predate Valyria and the slaver empire of Ghis. The cities of Yi Ti are said to far surpass those of Westeros in size, splendor, and population. However, it is impossible for anyone “today” to know for sure, as a few traders who made it this far east could only see the trading posts and port suburbs.
The culture of Yi Ti may seem strange to Westerosi and outsiders, but it is based on traditions, rites and ceremonies that are thousands of years old. The empire is ruled by a god emperor, whose respective dynasty is always assigned to a color or a gemstone.
However, the office has lost much of its ancient power and influence. The God Emperor only has limited power in his imperial domicile and exercises more representative tasks in the realm. Yi Ti, on the other hand, is ruled and ruled by hundreds of princes and generals of the emperor. A golden patchwork quilt of dominions has become Yi Ti in recent history.
Also handed down are strange rituals, which the god emperors pursued, blood magic and cannibalism, in the realm of legends there are many stories about Yi Ti. Is there a grain of truth in these?
What could the Yi Ti series tell?
There are enough potential stories that the series makers could use. Likewise, due to the rare facts about Yi Ti, a lot of creative leeway could be used in the animated series. Each of the numerous previous God Emperors has accomplished great things, waged wars, tyrannized their people, or turned to magic.
This would also be ideal material for an anthology series. Because so far we only know that the animated series Yi Ti is being planned, but nothing about the format or the story yet.
The series could also be set far in the past and be a kind of Far Eastern fairy tale, but á la “Game of Thrones”, with a lot of violence, sex and intrigue. Or play alongside the Targaryen dynasty or the voyages of Corlys Velaryon, showing how the realm slowly decays but is still magnificent and powerful.
In any case, the planned Yi Ti series could show us a completely different, new, exciting and magical world within the “Game of Thrones” universe. The animation format, meanwhile designed by George Martin personally in his blog has been confirmed seems perfectly suited for this. This would perfectly represent the breadth of colors, patterns, gigantic structures and strange landscapes of Yi Ti.
So far, however, there is little further information. Only that it will probably not be a “children’s animated series” seems to be secured due to the “Game of Thrones” brand. So we’ll probably have to wait until next year, when HBO might make its first big announcement, including a teaser trailer, at a larger fan event.
The final episode of the first season of “House of the Dragon” will be released next Monday on Sky Atlantic and the streaming provider Wow.
