Episode 5 “Regent” is now available on Wow. In the latest “House of the Dragon” episode, Alicent Hightower (Olivia Cooke) and Rhaenyra Targaryen (Emma D’Arcy) have to deal with the aftermath of the Battle of Crow’s Rest and first restore order.
After Ser Kriston Herb (Fabien Frankel) attacked Crow’s Rest and three dragons fought in the battle, Vhagar, Meleys and Sunfyre, the Hand of the King returns to King’s Landing – and first displays the severed head of Meleys.
The battle won for Team Green
During the Battle of Crow’s Rest, King Aegon (Tom Glynn-Carney) was seriously injured – by his own brother, Aemond. Afterwards, Aemond was also able to overpower Princess Rhaenys Targaryen (Eve Best) and her dragon, Meleys.
To celebrate the victory over Rhaenys and to conceal Aegon’s true condition, a parade is held in King’s Landing. Meleys’ head is openly displayed and it is announced that Aegon has slain the dragon. But how is the hero so celebrated by the people really doing?
This is what happens next with King Aegon
Aegon has serious injuries and burns. The Grand Maester is not sure if he will ever wake up again and Alicent is also worried about her son’s life. We already know how Aegon’s condition develops from George RR Martin’s book.
In the meantime, Aegon’s brother Aemond is the King Regent’s deputy and fights the war against Rhaenyra. Aegon himself will never fight again and will be a king in the shadows.
The fact that Aegon was injured so badly by fire may be surprising given that Daenerys (Emilia Clarke) appears to be resistant to fire in “Game of Thrones”. George RR Martin has already confirmed that Targaryens are by no means resistant to fire, but are just a little more resistant to heat than other people. Find out here why Daenerys survives the fire in “Game of Thrones” anyway!
Rhaenys’ death has far-reaching consequences for Rhaenyra
While Alicent conceals the true condition of Aegon in Hightower, who is celebrated as a dragon slayer and hero, and regroups with Aemond after the Battle of Crow’s Rest, Rhaenyra Targaryen also has her hands full. She must not only cope with the death of her aunt, but also of a valuable ally.
Rhaenys was Rhaenyra’s Hand and one of only a few female dragon riders. Although the Blacks, Rhaenyra’s faction, have more dragons than the Greens, Rhaenyra’s court lacks dragon riders, which makes Rhaenys’ death all the more painful.
To solve the problem of the King’s Hand, Rhaenyra asks her niece Baela (Bethany Antonia) to seek out Corlys Velaryon (Steve Toussaint) and ask him to become the new Hand of the Queen.
Will Corlys Velaryon become Rhaenyra’s hand?
As Rhaenys’ widower, Corlys is naturally devastated. He blames Rhaenyra for Rhaenys’ death. The fact that Corlys’ children also died in the first season makes him a broken man. At first he does not want to accept the honor of being Rhaenyra’s new Hand.
The fact that Rhaenyra herself did not go into battle to support Rhaenys and also prevented her children from doing so are the main reasons for Corlys’ anger. If Rhaenys had not flown into battle alone, she would probably have survived.
Those who are familiar with the book know that Rhaenyra’s son Jace (Harry Collett) will ultimately persuade Corlys to answer the call. During the Dance of Dragons, he will take his place at Rhaenyra’s side.
Which dragon riders will assist Jace and Rhaenyra?
Rhaenyra’s son also has a solution to the dragon rider personnel issue. To make the masterless dragons battle-ready with riders, Jace suggests seeking out bastards and in-laws.
Over time, Velaryons and Targaryens eventually married into other houses. The dragon blood was diluted, but not too weak to ride a dragon. Some candidates have even already been introduced in the series.
The two Holk brothers Alyn (Abubakar Salim) and Addam (Clinton Liberty), the bastards of Corlys Velaryon, turn out to be powerful allies for Rhaenyra. Addam of Holk even becomes a real dragon rider.
Hugh Hammer (Kieran Bew), who we see in the fifth episode trying to escape from King’s Landing with his family, also becomes a dragon rider. We’ll tell you which six dragon riders Jacaerys and Rhaenyra will recruit in the coming episodes!
