IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT– This post contains MASSIVE SPOILERS from The Last of Us and by extension some from HBO’s The Last of Us series.
It is impossible not to remember The Last of Us Part I (The Last of Us or The Last of Us Remastered) while watching the HBO series The Last of Us. I’m sure you’ll be charting the path of the game in your head as the series progresses. In each new location you think: they are here and this happened, you had to solve this puzzle, fight these enemies and they said such and such a phrase. It happens to me and it sure happens to you.
On Friday, January 27, I have to go out and get my copy of Dead Space Remake, so it occurs to me that it would be a good time to take The Last of Us Parte I and replay it… because I haven’t revived the story since the release of the remaster.
The thing does not end there. On Tuesday, January 24, I went out to buy cereals, trinkets and those things that a responsible adult buys to see The Last of Us 1×02 again. At the risk of being run over, I put my only neuron to work: I tried to make a mind tour of the game from beginning to end, but I was unable. I only remembered my favorite parts… and the ones that traumatized me the most.
The Last of Us: the scenes that marked me the most
My idea for this week is simple: tell you which are the scenes that most marked me from The Last of Us (and why) and tell me in comments which ones marked you (and why, if possible). A publication by fans and for fans! I’m sure we all agree on the first one…
Joel, Sarah and our broken heart
The Sarah’s death in The Last of us (video game and series) it is a cruel act, an emotional low blow to all of us who play for the first time. Video games don’t usually mess around with kids too much… but Neil Druckmann and his team did.
Sarah’s death scene is heartbreaking. I know why it is, but I still don’t understand how they make us hurt so much. We’ve known Sarah and Joel for 20 minutes, but The Last of Us manages to make most let’s empathize very quickly. Perhaps the scene with the clock, Joel’s fear and Sarah’s innocence have a lot to do with it. In general, the The Last of Us prologue he is superior to me and always will be.
The Outskirts and the Infected
I am a lover of post-apocalyptic settings and I consider myself an expert in the whole zombie thing. I have read, seen and played dozens of works. From Left 4 Dead, through Back 4 Blood, World War Z and others, to Days Gone. Call them spawners, infected or runners, all types or variations of zombies.
The outskirts or the downtown boston He blew me away. The scale of the post-apocalyptic setting is insane, the buildings in ruins and nature claiming what is its own captivated me. Naughty Dog’s work is overwhelming: the settings look like photographs, places frozen in time that show the last moments of humanity’s hegemony. And this runs from start to finish. And the HBO series reproduces these sensations perfectly!
On the other hand, the infected are raised in the same way as other games: we have the basic enemies and the powerful guys. Needless to say, he Clicker and Clicker is terror made character in The Last of Us. Now we know how to combat it, but at first hearing the sound of it made us hold our breath in real life. The part of Museo It is horrible, both in the series and in the video game. Fear turned into respect over the years.
Complicity between Joel and Ellie: Pittsburgh road
My next favorite moment is after I leave Bill, when Joel and Ellie are traveling to Pittsburgh. For me, the affectionate relationship between the two characters begins at that moment. Ellie gives Joel a cassette with music that she likes, she confesses her concern about the “To Be Continued…” from the comics and jokes.
Meanwhile, Joel enjoys the music and worries that Ellie is looking at a modeling magazine with risqué photos. The girl is teasing him. Then she drops the magazine and joins Joel in the front.
For me, Ellie coming to the front and joining Joel is a very special move, a point of no return for both characters: they start to fuck honey y sow trust. From this point on, Ellie’s jokes begin and more conversations take place between them.
Later, Ellie save Joel’s life shooting a human enemy. Kill a person to save him. Ellie is terrified and angry, while Joel tries to play tough… but he finally relents and opens up to try to reassure her: he indeed had to choose between shooting or letting her die.
And soon after, Joel reciprocates with Ellie: he leaves her the hunting rifle to cover him during an assault. Joel’s face expresses genuine concern as she teaches him how to handle the rifle and Ellie looks at Joel fondly. Little ones details and gestures that fall in love The developers’ work with non-verbal language is perfect.
“Except you…”, the reality of Joel and Ellie
Here I am sure that I agree with you and with many people. I have seen and revisit this scene a thousand times over the years. The House on the Ranch is the setting for a scene very intense on an emotional level between Ellie and Joel. Their relationship has grown enough to be caring, but not enough for Joel to feel like a true protector. His ghosts haunt him.
Ellie runs away when she finds out that Joel wants to leave her with Tommy. The brothers follow her to a ranch. Joel finds Ellie reading a newspaper and they have a conversation in which they both say very ugly things to each other… but behind the words there is a collection of emotions very intense.
Two people hurt and refusing to let anyone into their lives, but at the same time finding comfort in each other. The initial friendship is transformed: Ellie sees a protective father in Joel and Joel sees another daughter in Ellie. In the end it is Ellie who hits the table:
Everyone I loved has left me or died. Everyone… except you. So don’t say that I would be safer with someone else because I would be more scared.
Ellie opens up, showing herself vulnerable y verbalizing their feelings. Joel does not correspond with his words. In fact, his response is a real jerk. Finally, she reconsiders and they continue together. Joel begins to accept reality: Ellie is her responsibility and he loves her.
The relationship between the two is strengthened by two dramatic events: Ellie takes care of Joel while he is injured during the winter and Joel goes to Ellie’s rescue, who has had to kill another person with a machete to survive. The relationship grows based on events of intense and traumatic events… just like in life itself.
The Hospital: Ellie Above the World
I don’t have to tell you everything that happens in the hospital: Joel shoots his way to prevent tests on Ellie, preventing tests from being carried out to try to devise a cure. Joel goes from antihero to villain… but it doesn’t matter. Nobody cares because we all made the same decision: to save Ellie at any cost. Ellie is our daughter.
No one denies that it’s a heinous act: he takes everyone down and lies to Ellie, but we can’t deny that he shows a infinite love for the girl. At this point, he considers her her daughter and is unwilling to let the past repeat itself. Later, Joel will confess that he would do it again. Me too. And you.
These are all my favorite scenes from The Last of Us Parte I! Now it’s your turn: which are your favorites? Why? Do you agree with me? Tell me in comments. I read you!
