At the MWC, TrinamiX is showing a face recognition solution that can be installed invisibly behind an OLED display. What’s still standing in the way of an iPhone 15 without a notch?
- TrinamiX face recognition consists of three cameras that can be installed completely invisibly behind an OLED panel.
- The system remains at least as secure as a fingerprint scanner. < ins class="adsbygoogle" style="background:none;display:inline-block;max-width:800px;width:100%;height:200px;max-height:200px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-7130643274838149" data-ad-slot="4774237423" data-ad-format="auto" data-full-width-responsive="true">

Apple’s FaceID and other facial recognition solutions are currently only possible thanks to a notch, i.e. a notch in the display. Because the cameras required for this, which scan and verify the face, cannot work through the screen and require a lot of space. TrinamiX claims to have solved this problem with a new face recognition system.
Extremely secure, invisible facial recognition
The German biometrics company presented its invisible 3D facial recognition in a smartphone reference design at the MWC. The system consists of three small cameras that are designed in such a way that they can be installed completely invisibly behind a thin OLED panel and still remain fully functional.
The manufacturer states that the system is extremely safe because, in addition to 2D recognition and projection of the laser points, it also recognizes whether the face is real skin or a mask. The unlocking time is less than a quarter of a second and the system works at a distance of 20 to 70 centimetres. It’s even certified for payment applications like Google Pay.
In the on-site test, we were able to see how well the face unlock works: Without the “liveness check” that checks the authenticity of the skin, a 3D mask unlocks the smartphone. However, as soon as the additional security feature was activated, the smartphone could no longer be unlocked with the mask – the liveness check recognized that it was a non-living object. You can see the technology in action in the video below.
However, we have to disappoint Apple fans who are now hoping for an iPhone 15 without a notch. According to the developer, integration is currently only possible for Android devices with Qualcomm processors. Whether and when this will happen remains to be seen.
