The return of Henry Cavill as the Superman of the big screen has been seen and not seen. Just days after announcing to great fanfare his reincorporation into DC’s great project for the big screen, he himself confirms that he will not be part of James Gunn’s project. What’s more, Gunn himself is already writing the film reboot of the Man of Steel.
It would be unfair to say that this surprises us. The cancellation of Wonder Woman 3 followed by the destruction of the “Snyderverse” and followed by the attempt to cast Robert Pattinson as the Batman of the recast DC Extended Universe after killing another unannounced caped crusader project didn’t leave much room for Cavill’s Superman. And that Dwayne ‘The rock‘ Johnson moved heaven and earth for Warner to bring him back.
For his part, Cavill himself has definitively said goodbye to the character in his own instagram account. A double shame as the Jersey actor declined to return to The Witcher season four to don the Last Son of Krypton’s cape and boots again.
Of course, as can be read in his statement, the decision was not in his hand and the announcement of his return was very serious.
I just had a meeting with James Gunn and Peter Safran and I have bad news. After all or what happened, I will not play Superman again.
Having received approval from the studio to announce my return last October, before they were hired [a Gunn y a Safran], this is not easy news, but life is like that. And I respect it.
James and Peter have a universe to build. I wish them and everyone involved in the new universe the best of luck and the most joyful of fortunes.
For all those who have been by my side for so many years, it is normal for us to be a little sorry. But we also have to remember that Superman is out there somewhere.
Everything it symbolizes still exists, and each of the examples it set for us is still there. My turn wearing the cape has come to an end, but what Superman symbolizes never will. It’s been quite a ride with all of you. With its good things and its not so good things.
Will we see a cinematic universe without Superman?? Not at all: DC is working on a new version with James Gunn fully at the helm of the project.
Goodbye to the Snyderverse, hello to the… Gunnerverse?
A James Gunn he still has one movie to release for Marvel Studios but he won’t wait for it to hit theaters to shape and take the reins of DC’s cinematic renaissance: the first big movie in the new universe has already started to be made, it will star a new Superman Y the script will bear Gunn’s own signature.
As indicated desde The Hollywood Reporter, DC’s big-screen reboot will kick off with a younger version of the hero. Specifically, in its beginnings. Now, the interesting thing about the matter is that they have left the door open for Cavill to join the project.
Among the projects that are on the list [de películas] there is Superman. In these early stages, our story will focus on an earlier part of Superman’s life, so the character will not be played by Henry Cavill.
Now, we just had a great meeting with Henry and we’re huge fans of his work, so we talked about a number of exciting possibilities for working together in the future.
The Hollywood Reporter dares to go further than Gunn’s official statements and ensures that this new superman will be youngerbut we will not be offered another origin story nor will he live in Smallville, instead we will be shown the young reporter Clark Kent from the Daily Planet.
Henry Cavill has touched the decade with the superhero costume and He has been the Superman of an entire generation of fans of the character. He has not been the first nor will he be the last, but it must be recognized that very few have known how to wear the cape and the symbol of the universal icon as well as him. And not just because of the size.
One stage is closed and another begins. Of the universe designed by Snyder, the productions that remain to be released remain. James Gunn has shown a special talent when it comes to handling both heroes and villains, so he has the benefit of the doubt. Meanwhile, the return of a Joker that has nothing to do with either of the two universes (that we know of) begins to appear.
