Of all the surprises that James Gunn has in store for his Superman movie, the appearance of Krypto is the worst in store. The filmmaker hinted that we would see the Man of Steel’s best friend (besides Jimmy Olsen) when barely a month had passed since the new plans for DC Studios were announced and the cast had not even been signed. Now he not only confirms it, but has also revealed the story of how the super dog sneaked into the script.
Through his social networks, and on the eve of the New York ComicCon, the director and boss of DC Studios has shown the first image of Superman with his dog Krypto. Both with their backs to each other, yes. The silhouette of the dog is very different from what we could see in other animated adaptations, including the Supermascotas League
As Gunn tells it, the adoption of an Ozu in his most rebellious stage more or less coincided with the writing of the script for Superman and, among his antics, it was a matter of time before the filmmaker’s lightbulb ended up going on. And although Ozu himself will not play Krypto in the film, putting both photos together one could say that they almost belong to the same litter.
“Krypto comes to the big screen this summer in Superman. Krypto is inspired by our dog Ozu, whom we adopted shortly after I started writing Superman. Ozu, who lived with 60 other dogs and never met humans, was problematic To put it mildly. As soon as he entered our house he turned it upside down, destroyed our shoes, our furniture and even ate my laptop. It took a long time before he let us touch it.
¿Why announce now that Krypto would appear and not months ago when the entire cast was introduced? The truth is that many of the images from the location filming already pointed to his appearance, but Gunn waited for a special moment to take the initiative: in addition to ComicCon, October is the month of the year in which is promoted the adoption of foster dogs. A perfect date to make new four-legged friends like Ozu.
“I remember there came a point where I thought, ‘God, how hard would life be if Ozu had superpowers?’ And so, Kryp to came into the script and changed the shape of the story as Ozu changed my life. “What better time to announce Krypto’s rogue than Adopt a Foster Dog month? By the way, Ozu is usually a pretty good boy now.”
In any case, at iGamesNews we have not forgotten all the times in which Chris Pratt, Star Lord in the Guardians of the Galaxy films, not only left the doors open for his entry into DC Studios, but also hinted that he was willing to give voice to Krypto. Not to mention that he was present and alongside Gunn in the filming of the film. Too much coincidence?
What we can tell you is that the release date of Superman is immovable: the flagship of DC Studios and the entire superhero megaproject that James Gunn and Peter Safran have in their hands will reach movie theaters July 11, 2025 with the intention of being the big hit of next summer. Something that, in fact, will pit the Man of Steel against Marvel Studios’ Fantastic Four at the box office. With a little luck, and if both films turn out as expected, we will have another “Barbenheimer”.
