The Covid-19 pandemic that swept the world in spring 2020 has defeated the superhero ambitions of Vin Diesel and Columbia Pictures. Released March 13, 2020 in several North American theaters, Directed by David SF Wilson and written by duo Jeff Wadlow and Eric Heisserer, Bloodshot was released on VOD platforms just two weeks later.
This comic book adaptation features the character of the same name, created by Kevin VanHook, Don Perlin and Bob Layton and first published by Valiant Comics in 1992. Bloodshot is played by Vin Diesel, an American actor internationally known for his role as Dominic Toretto in the Fast and Furious saga.
Bloodshot tells the story of Marine Raymond “Ray” Garrisson, who, after a successful hostage-taking mission, becomes a helpless witness to the murder of his wife, Gina. left to die This former soldier is being resurrected by Rising Spirit Tech, a company run by Martin Ax that specializes in cybernetics, transhumanism, and body augmentation for the military. Ray wakes up with superpowers, including increased regenerative ability and superhuman strength. Driven by a strong desire for revenge, he finally realizes that his miraculous resurrection comes at a price.
With a scathing 31% from critics on RottenTomatoes (167 reviews) but 78% from the public (+1000 verified reviews), Vin Diesel has made a sensational and most notably noticed entry on Netflix. Bloodshot is currently the most watched film on the platform and has risen to the top 1 of the SVOD service in France. The feature film, praised for its special effects, suffers from a “too classic” production and a lead actor who is a far cry from the muscular performances viewers have become accustomed to in the past.
