A unique setting in an iso perspective that is lovingly detailed and a deep story with real and emotional decisions: these were the virtues in 2019 that brought Disco Elysium numerous awards and even the first place on our list of the 100 best story games of all time!
Now The Thaumaturge has been announced on Steam and seems to be pushing exactly the same buttons as the role-playing game about the crazy disco cop once did – just with a completely different theme.
What is The Thaumaturge?
The title The Thaumaturge doesn’t roll off the tongue exactly smoothly, but its exciting premise makes it all the more so: In Warsaw in the early 20th century under the rule of the Russian Tsarist Empire, the world is in conflict. Russian soldiers, Jewish traders, Polish citizens and many other people each have their own values and interests that are not always compatible.

Wealth and dark abysses are close together: “The noble banquet of high society can quickly be followed by a robbery in a dark alley of the Praga district,” says the Steam description.
At the same time, the world is populated by the Salutors – sinister and supernatural beings who could have come straight out of a nightmare. We are supposed to play a so-called thaumaturge who can understand and tame Salutors. So they can even be used in battle and influence the deepest insides of other people.

The Thaumaturge: New RPG reveals its dark setting in the trailer
We want our Thaumaturge to be fully influenced by our own character creation and choices, allowing us to play in very different ways – just like we know from the different personalities of our Disco Elysium cops. Decisions and far-reaching consequences should also play an essential role.
The biggest difference to Disco Elysium, however, is that fights will play a much larger role together with the tamed Salutors.
The Thaumaturge is being developed by Fool’s Theory, who previously released the sneaky cyberpunk game Seven, and is published by 11 bit studios, who already have gems like Frostpunk, This War of Mine and Children of Morta under their patronage.
The Thaumaturge does not yet have a release date – if you are curious, you can download the game Steam but already put it on the wish list.
What do you think of The Thaumaturge so far? What are your hopes for the roleplay? Have you played Disco Elysium and are you hoping for more similar RPGs? Tell us about it in the comments!
