And again there are new rumors about the Switch successor: The Switch 2 will have a significantly larger screen than the previous console – but you will probably have to do without OLED.
In the past few weeks and months there has been a lot of speculation about the Nintendo Switch 2 – the successor to the current Nintendo console, which is still waiting to be announced. According to reports, this will be based on the current hardware, so that there will be no more fundamental changes such as between the Wii and Wii U. But of course Nintendo probably has various improvements up its sleeve that go beyond mere performance optimizations – and according to a new report, this should also include a larger screen.
This is what the renowned magazine reports Bloomberg now that the Switch 2 will come onto the market later in 2024 with a significantly larger screen than the previous Switch model. Accordingly, the screen of the new console is a whopping 8 inches; Hiroshi Hayase, an analyst at Omdia, reports this, citing supplier circles. Hayase is an expert in the display sector and knows the market very well.
Accordingly, the new Nintendo hardware will be “responsible for doubling the delivery volumes of so-called entertainment displays in 2024.” For comparison: The Switch Lite has a screen with a 5.5-inch diagonal, the original Switch model is 6.2 inches and the OLED model of the Switch is 7 inches – just like the base model of the Steam Deck. Even the Stem Deck OLED with 7.4 inches would put the Switch 2 in its pocket in this regard.
But there’s also a catch to the whole thing – and this is where the OLED technology mentioned several times above, which is used in the latest and most expensive model of the current Switch, comes into play: According to the Bloomberg report, you’ll initially have OLED on the Switch 2 have to forego. The larger screen is accompanied by a return to LCD technology, which the original switch also used – a real downgrade compared to the OLED switch.
Sharp could be a possible supplier, as the company reported in 2023 that it would produce LCD panels for an upcoming console. An 8-inch diagonal is impressive for a mobile console, but this is also likely to be associated with a larger hardware form factor.
What do you think about the possible dimensions of the new console without OLED technology?
