The cash injection from the Chinese giant Tencent opens up new opportunities for the still independent developer studio PlatinumGames. Therefore, the studio has recently made a number of announcements. In addition to the release date for the new edition of The Wonderful 101, Project GG also announced a new game yesterday, but that's not all.
Today it was confirmed that PlatinumGames is establishing a new studio in Tokyo, Japan, next to the previous headquarters in Osaka. In the future, th is studio will focus specifically on the development of live service games for consoles. This is largely new for the developer, as it is primarily known for action games with a single player focus.
PlatinumGames has experimentally ventured into the live service area in the past, but these were limited to the mobile area. Both Lost Order for publisher Cygames and World of Demons for DeNA have apparently been canceled. In the future, you will now have a big hit when it comes to live service titles on consoles.
Atsushi Inaba, Vice President and Studio Manager, therefore speaks of "a step towards a new challenge for us". The company wanted to "expand into new genres and game styles", whereby the new live service projects after the actual start would then consistently and regularly provide new content for a long period of time.
An announcement of a first project of the new studio was not made at first.
