Nintendo recently released the new annual report for the third quarter of the current fiscal year, which corresponds to the fourth quarter of the calendar year. During this period, Pokémon Sword / Shield has sold a whopping 16.06 million copies since its release in mid-November.
The newest main part of the series is the fastest selling switch game of all time and leaves last year's Pokémon: Let's Go! as well as Super Smash Bros. Ultimate behind. At the same time, it was also the most successful platform-exclusive title in 2019, even before the well-known competition for Days Gone, Death Stranding or Gears 5.

Even within the long-term franchise itself, the current part went one better. For comparison: Pokémon Sun / Moon brought the comparable quarter to 14.69 million copies sold in the opening quarter of 2016. Not only has this value been exceeded, the total sales of the last 3DS hit are 16.18 million and could have been broken by the end of January.
Pokémon Diamant / Perl, with a total of 17.67 million copies sold, is within reach and could possibly have to vacate its position later in 2020. Only the best-selling Pokémon title with red / blue is still out of reach with 31.37 million pieces.
