News business PS5: PlayStation has a record quarter thanks to its next-gen console and games
After Sony made the PS5 the fastest-selling console in its history, Sony continues its strong momentum. Now it’s the company’s quarterly results that talk about it. Records have been broken thanks to its console and games. We explain which.
Each quarter, Sony PlayStation’s financial results allow us to learn a little more about how the company has performed. The opportunity to know, for example, that the PS5 has just topped 13.4 million units sold worldwide
A second record quarter for PlayStation
First important figure, July through September 2021 is PlayStation’s best second fiscal quarter ($ 5.86 billion). Historically, it was the second quarter of fiscal 2018 that held the record when the PS4 hosted Marvel’s Spider-Man on September 7th. A success that makes the PlayStation division currently the most profitable of the Sony group (closely followed by products and electronic solutions) and which the company owes above all to its new PlayStation, which has increased hardware sales compared to the previous year (+ 287.4% to $ 1.46 billion this quarter). Normally, the console has not yet been marketed in the same period last year and sales of the PS4 are weakening from month to month. But above all we should see the results of the PlayStation Store (dematerialized software + DLC and microtransactions) which also had their best second quarter in the group’s history in terms of sales, with earnings of $ 2.86 billion (+ 6% year over year). We can probably thank the other sales of Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart and the arrival of Deathloop on September 14th. A big success.
