News business PS5: Sony plans an official launch in China in the second quarter of 2021
Sony has confirmed that the PS5 will officially be available in China in the second quarter of 2021. A faster time to market than the PS4, which waited until March 2015 before entering this market under a strict protocol.
As Daniel Ahmad, an analyst specializing in the Chinese market, explains, the PS5 models available in China should be geoblocked so that only games authorized by government agencies can work. However, Chinese gamers can bypass these restrictions by buying imported consoles, especially those from Hong Kong or Japan.
The Chinese market, dominated by online games on mobile devices and PCs, is gradually opening up to consoles that were completely banned in this area between 2000 and 2014. Research firm Niko Partners estimates that around 3.5 million PS4s have been sold in China, compared to 4 million Nintendo Switch and 1.2 million Xbox One.
