Playerunknown’s Battlegrounds is one of the few games where you can use a frying pan as a weapon. That is not the main reason for its popularity, but the unusual melee weapon has now almost achieved cult status. The battle royale shooter itself has also become extremely successful and is still happy today, despite mixed reviews, about consistently high numbers of players.
Anyone who has always wanted to knock a cooking utensil around the ears of other players can now cheer: PUBG is rising to the January 12, 2022 to a Free2Play model around. That was announced at the Game Awards in 2021.

New model with plus account
After switching to Free2Play, new players should be able to use their basic account on Battleground-Plus
upgrade. Players who purchased PUBG by January 11, 2022 will automatically receive this upgrade for free. Those who only have the Free2Play version, on the other hand, have to pay around 12 dollars once in order to use the advantages of the Plus account permanently.
The advantages of Battleground Plus are already known and include:
- A bonus of 1.300 G-COINs
- A Survival Mastery XP Boost +100 percent
- that Career Medals Tab
- access to Ranking Mode
- The ability to create and play custom matches
- The Captain’s Camo Setwhich consists of a hat, a mask and gloves.
Players can also earn additional rewards when they make the switch.
Rewards for old and new players
Anyone who is now considering entering the game themselves can now use a specially set up Website to register. Registration is unlikely to be required to access the game in January. However, this gives you the opportunity to get rewards in the game and take part in a competition.
The rewards are three Events
linked, for which you have to complete certain actions:

- Two Pre-setting vouchers (7 days)
The vouchers allow you to save several skin combinations and select them at the start of the game. Usually only one slot is available, more must be earned or purchased in the Survivor Pass.
Event 02
To invite friends: To complete this event, three of your friends must register before January 12, 2022 via an invitation link that you can forward to them after your own registration. You will receive the following rewards for this event:
- The Helm
Highside Slick
(Level 1) - One G-Coin-Eisenkiste
- The chance at one Contest Win an Alienware laptop, Xbox Series X, PS5, or other prizes
Event 03
My PUBG game style: At this event all you have to do after registering is to do a little on the website Test
complete before January 12, 2022, in which you answer several questions about your play style in the style of a personality test. The test is quite entertaining and – after linking your accounts – gives you the following rewards:
- 10 Contraband vouchers
- A new spray paint
Additional rewards for owners of the paid version
In addition to free access to Battleground Plus, players who have already purchased PUBG will receive an exclusive reward, namely the Special Commemorative Pack

What do the developers want to achieve with it?
In a press release, the publisher Krafton states that it wants to find new players by switching to Free2Play. The perfect time to take this step has now been reached.
It can be assumed that this measure is intended to slow the steady decline in players. However, the game is far from the lack of players: The battle royale shooter is still the third most played game on Steam and thus still a place ahead of the popular competitor Apex Legends.

But the – very slow – downward trend cannot be denied and the switch to Free2Play will probably lure some players into the successful shooter again.
New content is promised
Of course, new content is still planned after the Free2Play changeover. In addition to updates that have already been announced, players are promised new content at the start of the Free2Play version, including some surprises
. The announced revision of maps, on the other hand, will be postponed to summer 2022.
