When Greg Street left Blizzard and joined Riot Games a few weeks later, the rumor mill quickly boiled up. Is his new studio possibly working on an MMO based on League of Legends? If the project actually exists, it will now receive a severe blow: the “Ghostcrawler” resigns.
With League of Legends, Riot Games released a MOBA in 2009 that turned out to be a real gold mine. Unsurprisingly, there have been quite a few spin-offs in the universe. Probably the greatest success (from the point of view of the general public) the studio has booked with the animation series Arcane. The Teamfight Tactics auto-battler mode has been released as a standalone game, and Legends of Runeterra even has its own trading card game.

This is far from the end of the League of Legends spin-offs. Project L, a fighting game that is currently in development, has been confirmed. On the other hand, an MMORPG in the universe has not yet been officially announced. There were job postings that were explicitly looking for developers with genre experience, but Riot Games hasn’t published any really tangible facts about it so far.
After all, Blizzard veteran Greg “Nightcrawler” Street has admitted in the past that he is working on a new title. He joined Riot Games in 2014 after many years as the lead systems designer for World of Warcraft. Because of his expertise, an MMO was more than obvious. But this project may now have received a severe blow. Because the “Nightcrawler” takes his hat off.
It seems that personal losses are primarily responsible for this decision. He said in his statement: “A combination of private and personal considerations led me to make this decision. We have experienced some devastating personal losses over the past year and I want to be closer to my surviving family.”
So it’s understandable why he’s quitting Riot Games. However, the question now arises as to how his decision will affect the MMO League of Legends project. In further tweets, however, Greg explains that the course has at least been set. He has built a great team and the next phase is imminent. As for his future, he at least claims to have some exciting offers on the table.
