The build-up to Halloween celebrations begins earlier and earlier each year, and Konami hasn’t waited for the first pumpkins to appear on the street to create the right atmosphere: Bloober Team’s Silent Hill 2 remake has risen from the ashes (or snow) to show what its first hour and a half of gameplay will look like. Feelings of déjà vu? If you know the original by heart, you’re going to hallucinate.
What will you see? Konami has offered a sort of guided tour through the opening stages of the game (with Japanese commentary) through a collaboration with the YouTube channel from 2BROIn this we can see how those responsible for the Layers of Fear and The Medium saga have rebuilt the cursed town of Silent Hill through Unreal Engine 5 and, incidentally, the new gameplay and setting achieved with modern systems.
A step in the right direction, a bit too conservative or a faithful replica of the PS2 title? It’s all a matter of taste, but as you’ll see, in the remake of Silent Hill 2 There is a bit of all three. Above all, in the most fundamental: constantly maintaining the underlying tension that characterizes the saga and, from there, gradually unfolding the nightmare of its protagonist.
Announced in October 2022, albeit with several previous leaks that began to appear during September, the new Silent Hill 2 began to take shape in 2019. Bloober Team’s big goal is not to reimagine the original game, as in other remakes, but to offer an ambitious update that returns to its essence and, despite receiving a huge visual leap, feels enormously familiar to those returning to the cult classic.
Aiming to offer that game from more than two decades ago so that it feels on PS2 and PC just as they treasure it in their memories. And, as an example, this comparison between the first scenario of the game and its HD version from 2012.
On the other hand, in this generous gameplay of the new Silent Hill 2 Not only do we see how the action scenes will work, but also new ways of interacting with the environment, reading notes, using the map, and even putting on several new accessories, such as the cardboard Pyramid Head mask made from a pizza box that is offered as a bonus in the Deluxe Edition. Which brings us to the last question.
The remake of Silent Hill 2 will arrive October 8, 2024 to PS5 and PC. Within a month. However, the Deluxe Edition includes, along with the masks, the digital art book and the digital soundtrack, up to two days of early access. In any case, the goal is the same for both Konami and the Bloober Team: to offer the ultimate plan for Halloween.
