Sony shared new details about its upcoming PSVR successor, the aptly named PSVR 2, at its CES 2022 press conference yesterday.
While some important details about the hardware were revealed (it will have 4K HDR, a 110-degree field of view, and centerpoint rendering), there’s little information on the headset’s release date or more specific features.
“I asked Sony if PSVR2 would launch in 2022 and if it would be backward compatible with PSVR games (a question I was asked yesterday by a lot of people). Nothing was fixed yesterday,” he tweeted. “Sony PR says they have no further announcements at this time. Stay tuned…”
That means we’ll likely be expecting another PR blowout from the company soon. As we mentioned yesterday, the details revealed yesterday are in line with a report published on the internet last year claiming that the PSVR 2 will arrive in holiday 2022 and will use OLED panels.
If Sony does plan to launch hardware in time for Christmas, it would make sense that the company would want to start the marketing cycle sooner rather than later.
In addition to the headset, Sony also announced Horizon Call of the Mountain, a Horizon spinoff developed by Guerrilla and Firesprite Games, which will be a PSVR2 exclusive. “Built for PlayStation VR2, this unique experience is designed to advance hardware technology, innovation and gameplay,” said a post on the PlayStation Blog. “Stunning visuals and the all-new PS VR2 Sense controller give complete immersion in the world of Horizon.”
The game also has no release date.
