Sound, oh yes, there is that too. When we think about the most important game features, the sound usually leads a shadowy existence – especially when it comes to sound effects. It can still be conveyed that rousing music and suitable soundtrack make a game significantly better. But who cares what sound the healing station makes in Half-Life?
Us! We like it! In the podcast, Micha, Natalie and Jonas sing a song of pra ise for the sound.
Because sound is like breathing air for games: As long as it’s there, we don’t think about it much, although we know that it’s somehow important. We only become aware of it if it is missing.
And that’s unfair, because sound effects shape our gaming experience significantly – at least as much as the graphics, if not more. Be it the grog spitting from Monkey Island that Jonas can’t get out of his head or the pounding footsteps that Natalie is obsessed with. And Micha appreciates Skyrim even more after trying to hear the sunrise in the game.

Good sound also means a lot of work for development teams, as evidenced by countless making-of videos in which lettuce is smashed, cling film is rubbed and animal sounds are mixed in.
And this effort is worth it, because iconic sound contributes significantly to immersion. From the roar of the Tie Fighter in Star Wars to the healing station in Half-Life.
