- At the end of episode 2 “Under the Twin Moons” some questions remained unanswered for the coming episodes.
- Will Saru return to Discovery? What awaits us on Trill? We’ll tell you what happens next!
The second episode of “Star Trek: Discovery” Season 5 left some questions unanswered that need to be answered next Thursday on Paramount+. We’ll explain the end of the episode and what it means for the third episode, which will appear on Paramount+’s news program on April 11th at 9 a.m.
The next episode is titled “Jinaal”. In this is the ship’s doctor Dr. Hugh Culber (Wilson Cruz) is the focus, showrunner Michelle Paradise has already revealed. After the end of the second episode we already know that it’s going to Trill, a planet we already know…
Star Trek Discovery Season 5: This is what happens at the end of episode 2
In the premiere double episode we get to know the new villains of the season: Moll (Eve Harlow) and L’ak (Elias Toufexis). They chase after fragments of a map that will ultimately lead to a powerful secret. At the destination of their treasure hunt is the key to creating humanoid life.
Hot on their heels, the USS Discovery under the command of Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) sets off to find the fragments of the map in front of Moll and L’ak. In order to keep up with the criminals, Book (David Ajala), who previously had to do penal labor, is also recruited.
As a former courier, Book is able to predict Moll and L’ak’s moves better than the Discovery crew.
In the fourth season of Star Trek: Discovery, after the destruction of his home planet, Book teamed up with scientist Ruon Tarka (Shawn Doyle) to fight the species responsible for the destruction. The Federation tried to stop this, preferring to proceed diplomatically. Since Book has risked war through his warlike actions against the species, as punishment he has to help relocate those who have also been harmed by the species.
What role does Book’s relationship with Moll play?
As it turns out at the end of the second episode, Moll (Eve Harlow) is actually called Malinne Ravel. She is human and a former courier like Book. She is the daughter of Book’s mentor, Cleveland Booker IV, making her the closest thing Book has to a family. We remember: In season 4, Book’s family died in the destruction of his homeworld.
It is therefore possible that Book will take her side, but rather unlikely. He may work to protect them, but Book won’t be making common cause with the other side in two consecutive seasons. That would probably just be too much of a good thing.
However, it is likely that Book’s loyalty could be questioned again by the Federation, especially because of his past. He will probably try to protect Moll in life-threatening situations, which will make the Federation and Michael question whose side he is actually on.
Captain Rayner becomes Michael’s new first officer
At the end of the second episode, Saru (Doug Jones) leaves the USS Discovery because he wants to pursue his personal happiness. He and President T’Rina (Tara Rosling) of Ni’var (formerly Vulkan) want to get married and Saru also takes on a position as ambassador to the Federation to help it expand.
Michael Burnham replaces Saru not with a well-known person, but with series newcomer Rayner (Callum Keith Rennie). He is a Kellerun, a species previously briefly seen in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. What Michael likes about him is that he doesn’t mince his words and counterattacks her.
She hopes to receive more input and perspective than if she had chosen a person who would say yes and amen to everything.
Will Saru return to Discovery?
Saru leaving the USS Discovery comes as quite a surprise. Of course, many fans are wondering whether the Kelpian will return. We expect that Saru will definitely remain an integral part of the series and will probably return to Discovery soon.
Like Tilly, Saru will likely be recruited outside of the regular Discovery command when the going gets tough and Michael needs support from someone she can trust. It is unlikely that his role will become smaller. Saru is too popular with fans for that!
What can we expect next week in episode 3?
In the next episode, coming April 11, 2024 at 9 a.m., the USS Discovery searches for the next part of the map. After Stamets (Anthony Rapp), Tilly (Mary Wiseman) and Adira (Blu del Barrio) follow clues, they also know where the journey is taking them.
It goes to Trill, Adira’s home planet, so to speak. The Trill maintain a culture of fusion. There are symbiotes that are transmitted from body to body over decades, so the Trill carry the souls of many generations. Many thoughts and motor reflexes of these souls can be accessed.
Adira herself is not a Trill, but is the host of Gray’s (Ian Alexander) symbiote. We’ve already seen Trill in “Star Trek: Deep Space Nine” and the third season of “Star Trek: Discovery.” It was already confirmed in advance that Dr. Culber (Wilson Cruz) will be the focus in the upcoming episode.
Incidentally, “Star Trek: Discovery” takes place around 800 years after “Deep Space Nine” in the “Star Trek” chronology.
It’s probably about a symbiosis between humans and the Trill symbiont, in which Dr. Culber’s skills are needed to bring together incompatible hosts and symbiotes, as he did with Adira. With Adira, Culber was even responsible for getting the symbiote out and transferring Gray’s mind into an android.
