- Episode 5 of “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds” opens with a tribute to a legendary “Starship Enterprise” episode.
- Spock dreams of a ritual in which he must fight for his fiancé, T’Pring. A self-fulfilling prophecy!
- In “Starship Enterprise” Spock actually has to fight for T’Pring in a fight of life and death.
The fifth episode of “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds” is available in Germany on Paramount+ and delivers a wonderful homage to “Spaceship Enterprise” in the opening scene, more precisely to the legendary episode “Space Fever”, in which Spock (then Leonard Nimoy) makes the famous Vulcan salute for the first time.
In the first scene of “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds” Episode 5, T’Pring (Gia Sandhu) demands that Spock (Ethan Peck) fight for her favor. This scenario and the role of T’Pring are familiar to fans of the “Star Trek” universe in a very similar form from the episode just described. We explain Spock’s dream to you!
The first scene of the new episode, The Dream of Spock, takes place on Spock’s home planet, Vulcan. Spock wishes to marry his fiancé, T’Pring, in Vulcan fashion. However, she interrupts the ceremony when she sees that he has human ears.
She demands that he fight for her in the Kal-if-fee – against himself, but with Vulcan ears. She doesn’t want to marry a human and so Spock’s human side must fight against his Vulcan side for T’Pring.
The dream’s metaphor is simple: Spock feels torn between being a Vulcan and being a human. T’Pring puts him under pressure to hide his humanity. But what is the Kal-if-fee all about?
Star Trek: What is the Kal-if-fee?
The Kal-if-fee is a wedding ritual in which the man, in this case Spock, fights for the promised woman and thus has to prove himself worthy. The woman may demand this ritual insofar as she does not fully agree with the choice of husband made by the parents in childhood.
Spock’s dream is also a kind of self-fulfilling prophecy, because in episode 1 of the second season of “Starship Enterprise”, “Amok Time”, T’Pring, then played by Arlene, demands Martel, the kal-if-fee to detach from Spock.
In the “Star Trek” chronology, “Starship Enterprise” takes place about seven years after “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds”.
T’Pring demands that Spock fight his best friend, James T. Kirk (William Shatner). Spock can win the fight to the death and the supposedly dead Kirk is saved by a ruse by Dr. McCoy (DeForest Kelley) is beamed back on board alive.
After Spock has thus asserted his “right” to T’Pring, she explains to him that she would love another man who also loves her. Spock is never there for her as he is always on board the Enterprise and so she doesn’t want to be with him. Spock understands this and releases them “free”.
The conflict between Spock and T’Pring is now also addressed in “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds”. She fails to understand that Spock should devote his life to Starfleet and his duty. At the end of the episode, however, both can empathize better and understand each other.
They want to be together and are optimistic about the future. Of course, fans ask themselves how the two will grow apart within the next seven years. Will we see more conflict or is this simply due to Spock completely neglecting his fiancée during his space travels?
