The two faces of the Breen
The Breen are known from “Star Trek: Deep Space Nine”. In the cult series they always wear a mask. In “Star Trek: Discovery” the mystery of what the Breen look like behind the mask is finally solved. They can take two forms, a “liquid” and a “solid”.
The captain always goes on away missions
When Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) wants to go on an away mission in episode 5 “Spiegel”, Rayner (Callum Keith Rennie) wants to stop her. He believes the captain should stay on board.
Although this is resolved in the end in such a way that Rayner does not want to be responsible and temporarily takes command, it can also be understood as a wink to the fact that it is now tradition in “Star Trek” for the captain to go on dangerous away missions.
Since the captain is the main character in many “Star Trek” series, it is logical from a dramaturgical point of view that he is also part of the “case of the week”. From a logical perspective, Rayner would be right. A captain is far too important in rank to go on away missions every time.
