In “Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow” a time travel story is told. La’An (Christina Chong) ends up in a parallel universe and has to save her timeline together with the Kirk (Paul Wesley) from the other timeline. In the 21st century, an event must be foiled in order to restore La’An’s timeline. For this, however, Kirk must condemn his timeline.
An exciting Star Trek: Strange New Worlds episode about the existence of the Prime timeline. At the end of the episode, after all the time travel madness, La’An is back on the Enterprise under the command of Capta in Pike (Anson Mount). In her quarters she finally receives an unexpected visitor.
An agent from the Department of Temporal Investigation suddenly sits in front of La’An and tells her not to talk to other people about her time travel. The device with which La’An subsequently traveled to the 21st century also came from a temporal agent and she has to return it to the agent.
Star Trek: What does the Federation Agency for Temporal Investigations do?
Known as the Department of Temporal Investigation, Starfleet’s division is a department responsible for ensuring that time travel is conducted on a regular basis and that no timelines are destroyed. The agents themselves also travel in time.
Funnily enough, Captain Kirk has the most cases, since he has interfered with the timeline quite frequently. In this case, the time travel goes back to Kirk, even if it’s a Kirk from another timeline.
The authority dates back to the 24th century and thus also appears in “Star Trek: Deep Space Nine”. Presumably in the 29th century it becomes the “Commission for Temporal Integrity”. This has a similar job, but was never associated with the Department of Temporal Investigation in the “Star Trek” universe.
Difficult to chronologically classify, but in a linear understanding probably in the 22nd century, there is the Temporal Cold War. Factions travel through time and change historical events. The warmongers are more from the 29th century.
As a result of the Temporal Cold War, time travel and time travel technologies are finally outlawed by the time of “Star Trek: Discovery” Season 3 in the 31st century.
The next episode of “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds” season 2 will be released on June 6, 2023 on Paramount+. In late summer we can also look forward to other “Star Trek” releases!
