The second sequel to Danny Boyle and Alex Garland’s 2002 horror classic 28 Days Later is finally here, and they’re back for a third round.
The Hollywood Reporter dropped the juicy scoop yesterday (January 10), claiming that original director Danny Boyle and screenwriter Alex Garland have signed on for the film, currently titled 28 Weeks The story cracks a story, a sequel to the less popular 28 Weeks Later. (2007). Boyle and Garland had little involvement in the development of “28 Now,” which hurt the sequel’s reception but didn’t diminish its box office performance.

Apparently, the package Boyle and Garland will present to studios and streamers as soon as this week includes plans to make two more films based on “28 Years,” which could make the series’ return a zombie Popular movie trilogy. Plot details are unclear at the moment, but it’s not unreasonable to expect it to be bigger, especially since each movie’s projected budget is “in the $75 million range,” according to THR’s own sources. While that sounds very reasonable by today’s standards, consider that “28 Days” and “28 Weeks” cost $8 and $15 million to produce, respectively.
Boyle and Garland (the latter of which has Civil War opening in theaters on April 26) will also produce, along with original producer Andrew Macdonald and former Fox Searchlight head Peter Rice.
