game news The atmosphere of Ghost of Tsushima, the shape of Trek to Yomi, this amazing game was the only thing that Future Game Show had left!
The Spirit of the Samurai was the last game shown during the Future Game Show. A title amazing for its artistic direction, reminiscent of two games that also talk about samurai.
From stop motion to directing
While it’s difficult to make an exhaustive list of all the interesting video games at this Saturday’s Future Game Show, some caught the eye more than others. Be it through enticing gameplay promises, stunning graphics, a special visual atmosphere or even… an atypical artistic direction. It’s probably thanks to the latter that The Spirit of the Samurai was able to mock some viewers at the event, which features video game content in the Summer Game Fest continuity. The Spirit of the Samurai is a 2D game whose aesthetic is stop motion. An English term that could be translated as “Animation step by step“. But a video shows it better than 1,000 speeches:
Discover a carefully crafted world steeped in Japanese mythology and folklore. Wander through ruined villages, mountain caves, abandoned cemeteries and more. Face off against yokai, undead monsters and demons, all expertly rendered in a highly detailed stop-motion style à la Ray Harryhausen.
A Metroidvania with Ghost of Tsushima atmosphere
As for gameplay, it’s not inconsistent to watch Trek to Yomi (available in PlayStation Plus) both the aesthetics and the atmosphere are reminiscent of this samurai game. So it’s a question of Japanese folklore in which the player must fend off the invader: here it is difficult not to connect with Ghost of Tsushima. The player embodies three different characters: Takeshi, a skilled samurai, Kodama, a brave but tiny spirit, and Chisai, a warrior cat with the following promise:
Each of them interacts with the world in different ways, be it intense sword combat, precision platforming, or exploration.
The Spirit of the Samurai is a Metroidvania that will therefore appeal to fans of the genre but also of samurai folklore or the stop motion work done here. To find out: In 2024 it will only appear on PC for the time being.
