This doesn’t look good for Borderlands: While Europe shooter fans still have to wait until August 22, 2024, Eli Roth’s game adaptation has already started in the USA. But after the devastating reviews, almost no one is flocking to the cinemas, as a look at the current box office results shows.
Borderlands is on track to be a massive flop
A report by Variety According to reports, Borderlands only grossed $8.8 million in the US alone on its opening weekend. Including revenue from other countries where the film has already been released, Borderlands has a current box office gross of total of 17 million dollars worldwide.
For big blockbusters, the first weekend is crucial, while the numbers for any film usually drop after that. For direct comparison: other moderately successful game adaptations such as Assassin’s Creed or Hitman of 2007 at least came with better numbers at their respective launch dates.
A catastrophic result for Borderlands, especially considering the production costs: Sea Deadline The film alone is said to have had a budget of around 115 million US dollars and an additional 30 million in marketing. At least at the moment, it doesn’t look like Borderlands will be able to recoup that amount.

A flop foretold?
However, given the devastating criticism of the film, this result is not too surprising. Because the Borderlands film was not under a good star from the beginning: Filming was actually supposed to end in June 2021, but post-production was massively slowed down by the Corona pandemic.
Eli Roth was no longer available for the extensive reshoots and Tim Miller stepped in for him. It was not until 2024 that the first pictures and trailers appeared, which were anything but well received by game fans and moviegoers – the casting of well-known and popular characters alone caused a lot of criticism.
