Geoff Keighley’s The Game Awards took place again this December. The best games of the year were honored and numerous new top titles were announced for the first time – and that attracted crowds of spectators.
December’s The Game Awards remains one of the biggest gaming events of the calendar year and is proving to be a crowd puller and crowd favourite. Viewership has grown year on year since journalist and host Geoff Keighley’s format began – and 2022 not only set another record, it also broke a real milestone.
As has now been announced, The Game Awards 2022 brought a whopping 103 million views of live streams around the world, breaking the magical 100 million mark. Of course, this is also a new record for the format itself, which attracted around 20 percent more viewers in 2022 than before.
Just to put it in context: Geoff Keighley’s show made its debut in 2014 and attracted almost a paltry 1.9 million viewers at the time. 2019 and 2020 were immensely successful years, because after continuous growth until 2018, twice as many viewers were able to be enthusiastic in these two years as in 2018.
Far from the live stream numbers, the event turns out to be successful elsewhere on social media. The Game Awards hashtag saw a 31 percent increase in usage compared to the previous year.
Next year the Game Awards will be broadcast for the 10th time and it will be interesting to see what special ideas Keighley and his team come up with for the anniversary. But it can already be said with certainty that the number of viewers will probably set a new record again.
