After a long wait, the TV series based on The Last of Us finally started – and how! In the US, HBO got off to an excellent start, which only has to hide behind a heavyweight.
The first reviews of Naughty Dog’s TV series adaptation of The Last of Us were almost universally positive – but that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s a success among viewers. In this case, however, yes, because the series got off to an excellent start on the US broadcaster HBO.
As confirmed following the airing of the first episode of season 1, The Last of Us got the second-best start of any HBO format ever. Within a very short time, the first episode had 4.7 million viewers on the pay channel in the USA. This leaves the format behind prominent other series such as “Boardwalk Empire” from 2010, which previously held second place in this category, on which The Last of Us now lies.
It wasn’t quite enough for first place, because there is a completely different heavyweight: the Game of Thrones spin-off “House of the Dragon”. The premiere was followed by almost ten million viewers right from the start, but after the immense success of “Game of Thrones” the spin-off was also considered the most awaited series ever.
The Last of Us can build on the good start and certainly has the momentum on its side. The number of viewers will certainly continue to climb – as is the case in the streaming age – in the coming days, also because the feedback from the first viewers was just as positive as that from the press. At IMDb, the series has so far had a rating of 9.5/10 with over 37,000 votes and, at least as far as that is concerned, puts the competitors in their place for the time being.
We have summarized our opinion on the first episodes of the TV series The Last of Us on HBO and in this country Sky/WOW in a separate article.
