Game News This role-playing video game is not a “Baldur’s Gate 3 among pirates”: it is inspired by it, but takes a different path
In 2023, Larian Studios reawakened a new passion for role-playing games in millions of gamers. Several studios working on similar projects were encouraged to believe that a new era for Western RPGs was dawning. At the end of October 2024, a new representative of the genre will arrive. Quickly described as “Baldur’s Gate 3 among pirates,” Flint: Treasure of Oblivion is inspired by it, but takes a different path.
Baldur’s Gate 3 among the pirates?
It would be easy to compare Flint: Treasure of Oblivion and Baldur’s Gate 3, and you don’t need to look any further. The games from Savage Level and Larian Studios belong to the same genre and subgenre, the tactical RPG, and actually have a lot in common, especially gameplay-wise. The title published by Microïds is based on three pillars: exploration, turn-based combat and a credible piracy universe.
The studios obviously do not pretend to offer fans of the genre a story with a thousand and one branches. On the contrary, The authors prefer to guarantee an unforgettable adventure full of twists and camaraderie, at the risk of being linear. In terms of gameplay, role players will be moving in familiar territory. For example, dice rolls of 20 determine the success or failure of your actions in combat (but not only) through tactical definition. Another difference to its famous role model and last but not least, Treasure of Oblivion makes gold the central resource on which the progression system and thus the RPG mechanics are based.
Recruiting crew members, purchasing weapons, and gaining experience are closely tied to the gains Flint and his followers make through exploring the environment and unfolding the story, rather than through combat, which is the case in the landscape of contemporary RPGs. Finally, With his desire to build a believable pirate universe, Savage Level rejected any fantastical element. No magic can break the immersion. The weapons and equipment are meant to be consistent with the times while offering gameplay subtleties to vary the enjoyment.
Comics as a narrative engine
The 9th art is in the spotlight. Flint: Treasure of Oblivion swaps traditional cutscenes for a highly effective “comic book” style to tell the adventures of a pirate destined to become a legend. Illustrated by Fabrice Druet – a French comic book author who collaborated on the three volumes of Methraton – these “animated comics” give a certain character to this adventure that begins in the city of Saint-Malo after a delicate episode involving a raft and cannibalism. Aware that it cannot compete with AAA productions, Flint: Treasure of Oblivion demonstrates creativity and originality, which is to its credit.
