A new Tomb Raider was announced at the end of 2022. Since then, however, there has been radio silence. Now the publisher is giving a tentative sign of life and insiders believe they have learned the first information about the setting and story.
In December 2022, developer Crystal Dynamics and publisher Amazon Games announced a new Tomb Raider. Now Christoph Hartmann, CEO of Amazon Games, gave an update, which, however, contains no more information than the usual marketing jargon than the fact that the game is still in development:
“When you make a new Tomb Raider, the bar is set very high. The longer you work, the higher the expectations become, so it’s a huge task, but things are moving forward. I mean, there are some really great ideas here (…) things are going well, things are moving forward.”
Although the update contains little information, it shows that work on the new part is still ongoing. This is probably the most important thing for most fans. There hasn’t been a new main game since Shadow of the Tomb Raider, which was released in 2018 for PC, Playstation 4 and Xbox One.
In general, only a few details about the new game are known so far. Twitter/X user V Scooper, who has already leaked insider information from the film and entertainment sectors, claims to know details about the plot and the locations. According to him, Lara is supposed to travel to northern India, where a natural disaster has released the ruins and artifacts of the ancient emperor Ashoka. A race against time begins for Lara, as a group of enemy grave robbers and other rivals are also after these artifacts.
According to V Scooper, it is also an open-world game. The player will be able to explore the landscape and use typical means of transport such as motorcycles or parachutes. A possible name is already doing the rounds: IGN calls the game Tomb Raider: Next. It is doubtful whether the game will really be called that, as it sounds like a working title or placeholder.
Amazon Games is taking on the role of publisher for the first time. Previously, Eidos and later Square Enix were responsible for the series. In 2022, the brand was sold to the Swedish Embracer Group, which in turn licensed it to Amazon Games.
