Things seem to be in flux at Blizzard Entertainment at the moment. While other projects have been shelved, efforts to create a new Warcraft game seem to be intensifying.
Diablo Immortal had to take some criticism because of the business model and monetization, but for Blizzard Entertainment the primary mobile spin-off, which can also be played on the PC, was financially worthwhile. Apparently, they now want to build on this success in the mobile sector, because the Warcraft franchise also wants to be established here more extensively.
A new job posting indicates that work has begun on a new Warcraft game for the mobile sector. Accordingly, it should be a previously unannounced live service game within the long-standing franchise, which could therefore also be based on Diablo Immortal in terms of orientation.
With the title, Blizzard sees new room for growth for this IP. The project comes as a surprise in that another Warcraft mobile game that NetEase is said to have been working on was recently scrapped. They are now looking for a new Product Management Director to lead the production of this new, unannounced Warcraft game. Blizzard itself wants to deliver no less than the “next great game” within the Warcraft series.
Despite all the criticism of the business model, Diablo Immortal has meanwhile flushed more than 100 million dollars in sales into the development studio’s coffers. It remains to be seen whether the new Warcraft project will only focus on these sales, or whether the player criticism of the business model will be taken more to heart. We’ll keep you posted on what’s going to happen with the project.
