How they became what they are. The documentary shows celebrities as nobody knows them: grown up in ruins, often fatherless. Between hope and hardship, turmoil and unexpected success. “Wir Wunderkinder” accompanies well-known personalities through their youth in the fifties, which shaped them for life. For example the budding doctor Marianne Koch, the theater-loving student Michael Mendl or Roberto Blanco, who found his new home there as a singer. In addition to their early success on stage and screen, Marianne Koch and Michael Mendl had one thing in common at the time: They both found out late who their biological fathers were and what incredible stories they revealed. The actor Uwe Kockisch, who grew up in Cottbus, also missed his father painfully, who had been shot down as an air force pilot over Normandy. Even after his death, his father’s watchmaking profession was fatal for his son. Because of this origin, the “Arbeiter-und-Bauern-Staat” denied him access to the Abitur. Bettina Wegner was banned from school as a teenager. Raised in a quasi-religious childhood belief in the godlike Soviet leader Stalin, the songwriter increasingly distanced herself from the real mendaciousness of everyday life in the GDR and came into conflict with the “people’s own” apparatus of repression. For the son of Cuban parents who also enjoyed singing, Roberto Blanco, post-war Germany was completely new territory. For the first time, the entertainer, who grew up in Beirut, experienced a landscape of ruins in this country – and a thirst for life at the same time. The 50s brought all those portrayed the breakthrough into a more hopeful future, of which they would never have dared to dream in their barren youth. You stand for a generation that grew up in a country that was drifting apart in West and East at the time and helped shape it at an early stage. Growing up immediately after the war, they had to learn from an early age to stand on their own two feet. You have lived through a time when a lot was still a mess, but everything was possible again. Despite all the after-effects of dictatorship and war, the period of the 1950s was for most of them connected with building, new beginnings, confidence, carried by the spirit of improvisation and the overcoming of outdated moral concepts. These life stories are illustrated by newly discovered film recordings from those years and animated drawings in the style of graphic novels.

It is an eventful decade that shaped the youth in Germany like no other: the sixties. Celebrities tell how this period had a decisive impact on their lives. Whether Katja Ebstein, Elke Sommer, Maren Kroymann, Thekla Carola Wied, Winfried Glatzeder, Uwe Kockisch or Wolfgang Niedecken – many of them grew up in poor circumstances after the war and witnessed historical upheavals. The fathers of the former GDR actors Uwe Kockisch and Winfried Glatzeder died in the war. As children, they learn early on to get through life – each in their own way. With the construction of the wall in 1961, a different life began for them overnight, because now they could no longer travel from east to west. After a failed attempt to escape, Uwe Kockisch leads it directly to the notorious Cottbus penitentiary. Winfried Glatzeder, who has Jewish ancestors, lives adapted to the socialist system, but struggles with the economic and later also political conditions in the country – especially since the state security has targeted him. The singer and three-time Grand Prix participant Katja Ebstein lived in West Berlin at the time. She adopted a critical political stance from her war-disabled father. Even as a schoolgirl, she demonstrated against the rearmament of the Federal Republic. When the wall is being built, the sixteen-year-old shows edge with sit-ins and stone throwing. The cold war between the great powers USA and the Soviet Union kept the youth in suspense for the whole decade. Conflicts arise again and again, as in 1962 during the Cuba crisis. BAP singer Wolfgang Niedecken remembers his fear of a nuclear war well. No wonder, after all, the Second World War was only 17 years over at this point in time. Most of the young people are still apolitical, and the crimes of the Nazis are still rarely discussed – not at home and not at school either. That changes with the Auschwitz trials in Frankfurt, in which the suppressed mass murder of the Jews is brought into the public consciousness. Discussions are now replacing decades of silence, which often leads to rifts between the generations.
