The Steam Deck is a hit and Valve is using the bright future to talk about the sequel coming to its console/laptop. what can we learn
Everything is currently looking rosy for the Steam Deck, which can run over 8,000 games from indie titles to more demanding games like Cyberpunk 2077. In other words, its hardware is currently superior to that of a Nintendo Switch (for comparison). In this context of “opulence”, does the manufacturer Valve want a version 2 of its console soon?
Valve’s plans for the Steam Deck
In a recent interview with Rock, Paper, Shotgun
It’s hard to say because it will depend on how the developers go about it. I think the deck has the potential to be a solid target for the entire generation, but the work involved is more delicate than the typical deck UX tweaks developers have had to make for games that are already working well.
However, there are benefits to game developers doing this work. While high-end current-gen titles can fit into the deck and offer a great experience, it also allows for smoother performance across a wider variety of PCs, enhancing the experience for the entire playerbase.
In other words, making a game compatible with Steam Deck is a good way for a studio to ensure optimal optimization on most PCs. It’s a fact.
Not several years ago for a 2.0 model?
Designer Lawrence Yang, who also participates in the interview, adds:
However, we are optimistic about this. We’ve seen a number of recently released demanding titles perform well on Steam Deck thanks to on-device targeting and testing by developers. We’ve also seen a very positive response from customers when titles are Deck Verified or Playable, which was great to see.
A real next-gen deck with a significant increase in performance should only be available in a few years.
the word is out we shouldn’t expect a new, more efficient model for a few years. So the current version has a great future, which will hopefully allow for a maximum of games for a long time to come.
