Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is a gigantic game. And by that we don't necessarily mean the quality (although it also received an 89 in our GameStar test), but solely the pure memory size. Because the current CoD records up to the latest update 1.20 190 gigabytes of storage space on our hard drives.
On our PC, the complete package comes from CoD: Modern Warfare and the Battle Royale mode Warzone currently on 187 GB. Also on consoles it takes a huge amount of memory and like to occupy one fifth of the hard drive. As a result, the latest Call of Duty recently also earned the title of the "thickest PC game ever" – because no other video game needs more space.
We spoke to the developers and in an exclusive interview with Geoffrey Smith, the multiplayer design director, and Joe Cecot, the co-design director of multiplayer from CoD, where this unbelievably great hunger for storage comes from.
»It's just a giant game«
According to the two developers, there are two key factors that make the game take up so much space: Realism in weapons and characters as well as the many maps.
Accordingly, the numerous cards for all the different modes require a lot of gigabytes:
"When it comes to our weapons, characters and the game world, we attach great importance to accuracy and realism. Verdansk alone is huge and there are so many details in the map. One of our goals was to make our multiplayer realistic on the big map to achieve – of course, that's not easy.
We're trying to share game content, that is, using models and maps in multiple modes, but it's just a huge game. We have tailor-made maps for Gunfight mode and for multiplayer mode and for Ground War and of course we have the large Verdansk map. A lot comes together, like the co-op and single player maps. "
Will Call of Duty get smaller again soon?
But Geoffrey Smith and Joe Cecot also promise improvement, the problem is absolutely known at Infinity Ward and they are constantly working on ways to reduce the storage space. A few gigabytes can already be saved on the consoles using freely installable and uninstallable data packs:
"We try to mitigate the whole thing a bit by packing the modes in DLC packages. So, for example, if you've played through the single player, you can uninstall it again. But it's a difficult topic. We talk about it all the time and try constantly finding ways to optimize the content that we’ve already released. "
Future updates and patches So you don't necessarily have to eat up more space on your hard drives, but theoretically they can also provide a little relief. For now, the size of CoD: Modern Warfare remains a big problem.

Why do CoD fans love the worst of all maps so much?
In the same interview, the developers also told us why playlists in the Call of Duty will have to change regularly in the future. But there is also much happier news from CoD, for example a player recently won a seemingly hopeless 1v5 match with the atomic bomb.
